And they get paid almost minimun wage to cash you out not to be your personal mood uplifter. There is a customer service desk up front if you want to talk to people who care.

LOL ok man. I guarantee you they were trained on customer service as well and that is a part of their job. I never knew greeting a customer is being a "personal mood uplifter" or requires more pay.

Are you saying that I should, when delivering pizzas, go up to the door, ring the doorbell, not say a word other than what their price is, give them their pizzas, and leave? Not only is it good customer service to greet them, it's common courtesy.

Good customer service keeps people coming back. If someone is an *** to a customer, that customer is going to remember it and more than likely go somewhere else to shop.

Part of the Walmart 10ft rule is to greet & help ANYBODY that is within 10ft of you. EVERYBODY that works a Walmart is taught this rule at orientation and Walmart orientation lasts 8 hours.

So yeah if you work at Walmart, don't matter what your job is, you must adhere to the 10ft rule. That goes from the janitors to the store manager.

Don't get me started on the hypocrisy of the rules at Wally World.

The pointing thing happens because they frown on you being out of your "area". And while that seems silly, the root of it is if you were working plumbing and you walked a customer to garden tools...half the time they want you to show them their next item, you become their own personal shopper. Or another time, you get stuck in garden tools as multiple customer in that location ask for your assistance...all the while plumbings uncovered. Some of this gets built in as on a slow night your coverage area might get expanded as they send people home early. I once spent a 3 hour stretch covering the whole back half of the store (lumber, doors and windows, plumbing, appliance, flooring, storage solutions) and was reprimanded by my department head for not getting my inventory checks done.

The standing around thing is often a manager telling you to prepare to block an aisle for a lift operation or a posse round up to do a mass product pull. Once agian if you leave the area they asked you to be at to help a customer...you got heat for it.

The place just wears you down with what's asked of you. I quit after being wrote up for a insane situation where I was called to the front to cover for the lot attendant who was late. Helped load some doors on a truck, but the customer was irate that I wasn't allowed to tie the items down for him. Even when the front end manager came out and explained the policy, the dude said he wasn't buying the doors if I didn't tie them down. So I ended up unloading the doors while a guy cussed me out.

While all this was going on, a man had brought his clogged J trap to the plumbing department for help. While I was outside, he spilled water on the floor...slipped on it and was claiming something popped in his back and wanted an ambulance....I'm still outside unloading doors at this time. Because I have to cosign a customer complaint form for the front end manager, I get back to my department after the medics arrive. Now the assistant store manager wants to see me in her office to write me up...while she's preparing the forms...the front end manager pages me to yell at me for not covering my area.

I quit on the spot and on the write up form/resignation wrote..."leaving store due to cloning technology not able to help me at this time to be in 3 locations at one time per store policy"
              Wow. That's some ********.

I bought a grill from home depot online, got it delivered and guess what... wrong grill. I call and let them know, and they tell me they will get it to me the next day. I get this one and yep, it was the floor model, I get it and find about 2 inches of dust on the inside and elsewhere. Needless to say, it'll be Lowe's next time.

                    Obviously you've never worked retail.

Every employee's job is customer service. It's the front cashier's job more than anyone elses to provide good customer service. They see more customers than anyone else, and their attitude gives an impression of the whole store.

Regardless of the pay and break schedule, that's the job they choose. If they don't like it, they shouldn't have taken the job.

And I find it hilarious how your friend complains about an hour lunch and two fifteen minute breaks, that's more than most retail workers. Hell, in management you're lucky to get 30 minutes to yourself during a 10+ hour shift.

To flip this a bit, having worked various retail/hell jobs...I do my damnedest as a customer to not to be a pain.

I think the argument of good customer service is valid but the reality is the masses are HORRIBLE consumers. People, by their inherant nature, tend to take the dumb slogan "The customer is always right" to an extreme. I'm not sure if for some people it's a weird abuse of some sort of "power" or that people really are that mean and petty. But a lifetime of crap expeirences in different fields has gotten me to point of empathy with every server/saleperson/customer service grunt on the planet.

So when I get a grumpy/quiet cashier I don't take it personal. I recall the list of things that probably chipped them down to that point on the job and do my JOB and be a good customer.

There's a fine line when it comes to check-out person friendliness for me. Say "Hi" or some variation of it, but please DEAR GOD do not try to make polite small talk with me. Say hi, scan my crap, and then tell me the total. Any more than that and you annoy me.

And I usually use the self checkout at Wal-Mart, because of my aforementioned hate for polite small talk.

I was thinking the same thing lol. When I worked as a cashier it was 30 mins for lunch. And we got 1 or maybe 2 10 minute breaks.

Yeah, my lady works as a production chemist and she's so busy in here 10 hour days that she only has time to eat her lunch sporadically during the day. When I worked as a buyer I rarely had time to eat either, but when I worked retail I at least got my 30, 15, 15.

As an employee of the Home Depot until last week I can say that an individual store will run smoothly if there are enough people working, every department needs 2-3 people working. The problem is that most stores like mine would only have more then one person working in each department on the weekends. My dad went to his local HD on Friday afternoon couldn't find what he was looking for and couldn't get any help, he went to the same Depot the next day Saturday morning and he said he couldn't walk an isle or two without someone asking him if he needed help. As a shopper I hate when store employees keep asking me if I need help. If I need help I'll go up to them and ask, other then that stay the hell away from me.
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!
