Re: How to Ride a Bike
My dad taught me how to ride a bike when I was 3 1/2 years old. I had progressed to the point where I was riding without training wheels with my dad holding onto me. Then one day he just let go and I didn't fall. I don't really know how to explain how to do it because its hard to explain in words, but, with practice, anyone can learn how to do it (unless you have balancing problems or something of that nature).
This is exactly what my dad did, except he didn't yell pedal.Comment

Re: How to Ride a Bike
The way I learned was I'd stand on the pedals, balancing as long as I could near a wall. Once i'd start to fall, i'd just put my arm out or grab the ledge of the window. After I got the hang of that, I took it out to an open area, and then I started to fall, I'd just start pedaling.
Took me about 2 days, because I learned over the weekend. And may thy spirit live in us, Forever LSU

Re: How to Ride a Bike
I learned by having my feet ready to pedal, then a running start from my dad pushing the back of my seat... pedal as hard as I could and the steering came naturally.
For the longest time I had the bikes where you kicked back on the pedals to break... Then for my 5th birthday I got a mountain bike and the deal that would tell you how fast you were going (Bike MAX?), how far and what not... so the morning after my birthday at 5 am before school I decided to go for a ride and see how fast I could go... well, I hit 24 mph, and being new to the whole "hand brake" scene, I hit them both at the same time as hard as I could... This being a brand new bike, the brakes worked well... too well. I had a solid grip on the handle bars and went flying over them, slamming onto the front wheel and ground in total shock, still holding onto the handle bars... I stood up shaking with my jaw on the ground, "did that really just happen?!" Brushed myself off... WALKED my bike to the garage and got in the car to go to school.
I also was blindsided by a mailbox once going down a hill, it was wooden and it shattered, apparently I was built like a skinny tank as a child.Florida State Seminoles-Minnesota Twins-Green Bay Packers-Minnesota Golden Gophers-Orlando Magic-Minnesota Wild

Re: How to Ride a Bike
I never learned how to ride a bike either. Actually I did but contrary to popular belief, you can forget...

Re: How to Ride a Bike
Have to say I feel sorry for some of you guys that never learned to ride a bike, for me it was a big part of my childhood, so its important to me.
If I had to explain to someone how to ride a bike I would say sit on the bike and push yourself with your feet and coast to get your balance. Once you have that, start peddaling. Once you have that then you can practice wheelies, bunny hops and whatever else you need to do.Comment

Re: How to Ride a Bike
You can't learn to ride a bike over the internet. It's just something you're gonna have to do outside on your own or with a little help. It's not that hard at all. You just have to wait till you get that AH OK moment. One tip though is learn to use your brakes first. Apply the rear brakes first and then front.Comment

Re: How to Ride a Bike
I assume it can't be too hard to figure out as an adult. It's not something that can really be put into words...like some people mentioned, the dad holding onto the bike while you pedal and then letting go was very efficient. I'm guessing you don't want to be seen with your dad pushing you on a bike though, LOL
If you are right handed/footed...sit on the seat of the bike with your left foot on the ground and your right foot on the right pedal (also, it helps to have the right pedal in the "up" position, so you can immediately push it with your foot instead of having it in a down position in which the pedal has to reach the top of its arc before you can put pressure on it). Find some level ground, push off with your left foot and give the right pedal a push with your right foot simultaneously. Then as you are moving put your left foot on the left pedal and pedal with both feet while keeping your balance. Cruise at your own comfortable speed. Good luckComment

Re: How to Ride a Bike
I never learned to swim.
Weird because that was my first experience on a bike and I didn't have the reverse brake pedals either. In fact, I had no brakes on the bike hence running into a mailbox in my only effort to stop.Last edited by elgreazy1; 07-07-2010, 04:59 PM.Comment
