    Re: Your gruesome injury stories..

A couple years ago during the last day of summer workouts I was doing dumbbell bench, and I carelessly put the weight down. Unfortunately there were other dumbbells on the ground and my right ring finger got smashed in between the two weights.

The tip of my finger pretty much got busted open and I had to get stitches, it looked pretty gross at the time.

Also, once when I was skiing, I was just traversing across a rather difficult slope, double black I believe, when I hit quite a bit of powder and lost my balance. I fell down for quite a while, which was pretty dangerous because of all the tress, but eventually my ski popped off and I stopped. Unfortunately the tip of my ski hit me right under the nose. I had a severed septum and had to get a few stitches. My nose also wasn't the same for a while after that, I would push on the right side of my bone and hear a little noise, so I believe my nose was chipped a bit or something.

I broke my collarbone on the right side in January from snowboarding. Anyway, I also played in a competitive flag football league. I was disappointed that I would not be able to play most of the season, but asked my doctor how quickly I could get back to playing.
He gave me a time frame which meant I could be back before playoffs. Anyway, as the time came I went back for a checkup and another Xray. He said everything checked out and my collarbone healed really well and I could play flag football among other things.
      Exciting!
      Well...
I play Corner and we are allowed to bump and be physical so on the VERY FIRST play on defense in the 1st game back from injury, I go up to bump the WR at the line. He pushes my right arm across my body to get around me and I hear a massive CRRRRAAACKKKKKKK.
That is no exagerration. As soon as I heard that I fell to my knees and immediately could feel blood rushing to my right shoulder/collarbone.

So yeh. I was extremely pissed at the doctor. I went back the next day and this is what he said. No joke.
      (Paraphrase)
"Well, it looks like i missed a small crack when I showed you your Xray last time. Sorry about that."

      *Facepalm.
Ouch man, I broke my collarbone too. In 7th grade playing basketball after lunch (this had to be told to me, I was knocked unconscious and still have no memory), and apparently I was going for a loose ball and was flipped in the air, landing on my head and shoulder.

I think in my case the doctor gave me a 4 or 5 month recovery timeline. Doc didn't take into account that I'm a milk freak, and the insane amount of calcium I get helped heal me up in about 2 months, although my right collarbone is now about twice the size as my left.

Gruesome injury for me was when I was five and shattered my left arm in pieces (and I'm a lefty).

The curious child I was back then lol, had me climbing and hanging from a tree. I was with my aunt at a friends house when the incident occur. I just remember hanging from the tree and slipping on the branch and falling onto the floor...however...around the tree were sharp rocks that surrounded the tree and I fell onto them. I just remembered getting up and yelling in pain. My aunt's friends house was having a party so everyone there just looked at me and I had a face of horror as I ran through the house looking for my aunt. WHen she saw me, her face just turned white and they rushed me to the hospital.

I was in Kinder at that time and had to wear the cast for the rest of the school year. I even have pictures of my graduation with my cast. The kind of fun thing when I was in school was that I used my cast as a excuse not to work and got to have a free day throughout the day. A lot of kids were jealous lol but at that time, I didn't really know.

          Re: Your gruesome injury stories..

I've got a couple. On my 5th birthday I was at my cousin's house sitting on the front porch. Her large St. Bernard came jumping out of the screen door and right onto my back. As it did it's claw/toenail caught behind my left ear and ripped it almost all the way off. I had to go to the hospital and have it sewn back on. My school picture that year has me with a big bandage on my ear.

Next was when I was home from college over Thanksgiving break and my hip just locked up while I was in the floor trying to do something with setting up my Mom's Christmas tree. I have bad hips, but nothing like this had ever happened before. I mean I was playing basketball, tennis, flag football, you name it, at college so I was in great shape. Anyway I couldn't move an inch without it being excruciating pain. I wouldn't even let the EMT's roll me over. I had to make the 2 hour ambulance ride back to Lexington to the hospital on my stomach and not being able to move at all. When I got into the hospital the doctor was like "we are gonna have to straighten it out, it might hurt." That is probably the biggest understatement of my life. I have a pretty high pain tolerance, but it hurt so bad that I was just screaming. I broke my mother's hand because I was squeezing it so hard as they were working on my hip. Not fun. But it's all good now.

            Re: Your gruesome injury stories..

My story isn't really about me, but about my friend.

Anyways, I was over at my friends house with a couple of our other friends, and some lady friends, and we were playing horseshoes in the backyard. He has two sand pits across from each other, and over to the side about 10 feet our two tables that a couple of my friends were sitting at.

This is my first time playing horseshoes so I wasn't very good. I'm slowly building my confidence up when it happened.

I let go of the horseshoe awkwardly and watched it start sailing way over towards my friends and the girls at the table. It seemed like the horseshoe was going in slow motion, I was in shock and didn't yell duck or anything.

Two of my friends ducked out of the way at the last second (Only me and the person I was playing was paying attention to our game) but the horseshoe hit my friend square in the eye.

Not knowing what to do I turn away from everybody and start pretending like I was looking at the trees or sky or something, I wasn't sure what to do. I turn around about 10 seconds later and everyone was staring at me, my friend is covering his face, and one kid was on the ground laughing uncontrollably.

The horseshoe broke my friend eye socket or something, and then bounced and hit his shoulder leaving a pretty nasty welt. He was bleeding pretty bad and went to go wash his face off and ice it or whatever.

My friend no longer allows me to play horseshoes at his house anymore.

I got a bottle of beer from the bartender but he had to search around for the church key. Trying to show off my "manliness", I took out my keys and tried to open up the bottle with my car keys. Bad idea! The key slipped and I ended up scraping up my left index finger down to the knuckle. Blood started to flow out pretty quickly, and the bartender saw this and his eyes just opened up wide. He immediately got out a shot glass, filled it with some chilled vodka and told me to put my finger in there. That burned like hell, but it sterilized the cut and the cold temperature caused the blood vessels to constrict which reduced the bleeding. I kept my finger in there until he came back with a first aid kit and put some bacitracin on the wound and wrapped it tightly in gauze. Then, much to the horror of the people at the bar, I took the shot of bloody vodka and downed it.
That's really cool that the bartender made such a heads-up move.

Not so much of an injury, but still the most unbelievable pain I've ever had.

I had my appendix taken out and the next morning my bladder was full. I had been pumped full of IV's all night and so my bladder was about ready to burst. Problem was that I couldn't go to the bathroom...I just couldn't. The doctor gave me one hour to pee and I stood there and tried and tried but just couldn't quite do it.

Finally the nurse came in and told me to grab on to the hospital bed as she shoved a catheter up into my bladder. HOLY **** I will never forget that moment. The moment after was pure bliss though as I literally filled two bed pans worth of urine lol.

My **** was bruised and swollen for 3 days.

                  Freshman HS football.

I was sent on a blitz from my safety position. I ran untouched to the QB and grabbed him by the legs, immobilizing him but not taking him down all the way. During this struggle, my facemask had wedged itself in the crook right behind the knee of this poor kid. The next person to make contact on him was our Nose Tackle who had to be at least 220lb then (Thats a big 15 year old). The guy was looking down at me when he was blindsided by the NT and bent backward over me, collapsing his knee over my facemask.

His knee exploded right in my face and I could hear every little snap, crackle, and pop. Those sounds were followed by some of the craziest screams I've ever heard.

I dont think that guy ever played football again. And I never wanted to play QB ever again.

Well, it had been a few weeks since I had hurt myself (this seems to be a "you are injury-prone" description), but this time I can say that my injury was my fault.

Last weekend I was out in NYC celebrating my 30th birthday. Went and caught a ball game in the Bronx and afterward went with my friends all across Manhattan hitting numerous bars. Being my birthday, they were all kind and paid for my drinks. From the ballpark on 161st street, we picked up a Taxi and had it drop us off at 59th street and we then walked downwards back toward 38th street where our hotel was. While in and around Times Square, we stopped at one bar and laughed as my one friend, who is a Boston fan, was getting picked on by the NYPD guys there. They were really cool people and actually bought me a birthday beer. Anyway, after being in this one particular bar for a while and downing numerous drinks, we decided to leave.

We left the bar without much of a problem, then got ready to cross 5th avenue to get back to the East Side. As I was stepping down off of the sidewalk onto the road, I kind of forgot that there was a step downwards. As I was walking forward a person behind me also kind of caught the back of my right heel. This, coupled with my incredibly drunken state, caused me to fall forward. My right knee scraped up along 5th Avenue and tore a bunch of skin off. It started bleeding pretty badly. To prevent my face from doing the same, I instinctively put my left hand out and landed HARD on it. I immediately got a very sharp pain along the outside of the wrist, and the padding of my thumb had a nice dull ache to it. The thumb area immediately swelled up and started to turn colors. My friends asked if I needed to get to a hospital, but in my intoxicated state it didn't hurt too badly so I just said "Let's stop at a Duane Reed and I'll get some disinfectant and bandages." We stopped at the drug store and I got the stuff I needed and wrapped up the injury.

The next day was not fun. I woke up and my knee was still oozing a bit, but it looked normal and there were no signs of infection. I went and changed bandages and have kept the wound clean. It's healing slowly, due to where the abrasion is, but no bad signs. The wrist, on the other hand, is still killing me. When I got home from NYC this past Saturday, I decided to head to the ER since I couldn't get any sleep due to the pain and had no range of motion. My left wrist can not turn so that I can see my palm. Too much pain and stiffness. The swelling has gone away completely, but the discoloration is still there. At the ER, they did x-rays but those came back negative. They also gave me a TDaP shot as I haven't had one of those in over a decade. THAT hurt more than anything and just recently I was able to move my shoulder. Still, the pain in the wrist is still there.

The ER Physician gave me a referral to an orthopedist to check out my wrist on Monday. When I move it, the pain/stiffness is still there and I can feel/hear something that sounds odd. Looks like I'll have an MRI in my future and they'll see if I ripped any ligaments or tendons. There is ZERO strength in my left hand at this point which makes me think I may have done just that. Couple this with the pain that has returned in my previously broken foot (from the fact that I've done a LOT of walking on it now) and I haven't had a good night's sleep in ages. I can't take ibuprofen anymore as it makes my stomach kill, aspirin is out of the question due to the abrasion on my knee, and acetaminophen only works for a short period of time. I pray to god there is some magic pill they can give me to get rid of the pain so I can get ONE good night of sleep.
No one's fault but your own.

Playing basketball, I went for the steal.

Instead of slapping it with my palm, the ball went directly into the point of my pink.

Dislocated and fractured. My pinky was in the shape of a V. Didn't hurt at all, but as a junior higher, I was freaked out when I thought I jammed it, went to shake it off and saw my finger bent in a freakish way.

Ironically enough, the pinky gives me more problems now than it ever did then. And any time I think of that story, my pinky starts to really hurt.

This one is just me being a *******. Last May, I was running up my wooden staircase like a total jackass- skipping like 5 steps at a time. I'm almost at the top when my knee/leg/ankle/something cause me to jump straight up and come thundering down on the edge of the stair with my shin. I couldn't walk, or stand, so I crawled up the remaining 3 stairs and curled up in the fetal position at the top. It was the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. I tried to stand, but my right leg would just crumble.
Since I couldn't even stand up, I decided to look at my injury. About halfway up my shin, there was a large scrape and about a half-inch crevasse in my leg. It wasn't broken, but my tibia was damn sure bruised. It was horrific. I limped around for about 2 weeks.
During that time, I couldn't put any pressure on my right leg or I would crumble to the ground. I didn't go to a doctor, so I don't know the exact diagnosis on my leg, but it hurt like a bitch.

Wow. I wouldn't want to hang out with some of you guys if you're that accident prone!

I don't think I've ever had a "gruesome" injury per se, just a decent volume of hockey injuries. Here's some highlights:

I tore my groin (yes, TORE) when I was about 15. I had been knocked down to the ice and while I was trying to get up the play was flying by me. For whatever reason my first instinct was to get in the way, so from my knees I tried to take the puck carrier down. Let's just say it worked a little too well, and he was a big boy. Dead weight + one leg behind me one sticking out front. I was screaming. To this day I absolutely must stretch for 15 minutes or so prior to activity or I seize up and get all gimpy.

Busted my nose twice in two different hockey fights. Not much to say for this one, getting punched in the nose sucks and I don't scrap nearly as often anymore that's for sure!

I've had 4 concussions from hockey, one super serious which happened on a play similar to this, except for the fact that I was actually pushed from behind by the defender rather than catching an edge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhcG5-yQ1Q8

I still play hockey 1-2 times per week, 12 months a year but I stick to beer league these days.

3 years ago, I sprained my shoulder playing tackle football with some buddies. I was on defense, and the ball carrier was running full speed at me, he lowers his shoulder into mine and I heard a crack.

Had to go to the hospital (naturally) and had to wait for six hours just to find out that it was a sprain.

I could barely move my arm and it hurt like hell. LOL The guy even apologized for it the next day.

I also have problems with my knees (mostly my right) which seem to stem from playing basketball during the week. Sometimes I'll wake up in the mornings and start hobbling around and walking gingerly. I have even occasionally had what was told to me a "swollen meniscus" as well.

I've also had a few light ankle rolls while playing basketball too. I've gotten pretty lucky that it hasn't been anything serious, because it's been caused by the same thing; landing on someone else's foot.

My most gruesome injury isn't very gruesome at all. Almost all my injuries are hockey related and they're very mild.

1 time I blocked a shot and it hit me in the ankle where there was no padding from my skate, and I was out for the rest of the game (luckily in my game the very next day I was fine).

Another time I was skating as fast as I could to line a kid up for a big hit, but my skates were very loose and I fell head first into the boards at full speed. Luckily I lifted my head in the nick of time and I just got myself winded (I was actually quite shaken, I was muttering to myself).

I've been hit from behind (it was a really intense game). But it didn't hurt me.

I guess I've been very lucky
