Re: stupid/strange little facts thread
It's fast enough to create a flash of light. As is the snap of a pistol shrimp's claw, whose snap also produces sound as loud as a jet engine (loudest sound in the ocean) and the collapsing bubble is capable of producing temperatures equal to the surface of the sun. Both are capable of cracking aquarium glass.Comment

Re: stupid/strange little facts thread
This mantis shrimp is just amazing, I can't believe I've never heard of it before. I don't know about you guys, but I can't stop watching videos of them, lol. I must get my hands on one of these things someday. I could probably watch it for hours.
Problem: Clam has an extremely hard shell.
Solution: SMASH THAT ****!!!

Re: stupid/strange little facts thread
Aww, I was expecting a video of one of those 2 breaking an aquarium. Still, it is true that some of the Earth's most amazing creatures can be found under the sea.
Also, don't forget, maps are flat while the Earth is curved. Here are the longitudes.

Los Angeles = 118°<SUPERSCRIPT><SUPERSCRIPT>15'WLast edited by BurghFan; 07-30-2010, 01:12 AM.Steelers : IX, X, XIII, XIV, XL, XLIII

Re: stupid/strange little facts thread
Nah, as impressive as those feats are, a pistol shrimp can't really hurt you, or I guess I should say they won't cause any damage as it's a little painful to get hit. You have to remember this is a concussive force that stuns, not kills.
A Mantis shrimp, though, depending on the species, can and will hurt you pretty bad. Bigger peacock mantis shrimp, for instance, can cut to the bone.
Both are pretty neat to keep, a pistol shrimp forms a symbiotic relationship with a goby (fish), the shrimp being blind depends on the goby to spot predators while it digs a burrow for the pair, and they can be neat to watch. A mantis shrim is often considered a pest because it will make the animals in a reef aquarium disappear and they can be hard, almost impossible, to catch. Mantis shrimp are really neat though, and some are really colorful, though you really have to keep them in a tank by itself. Mantis shrimp are also very easy to keep, as for breaking glass that's mostly theoretical, they aren't going to smack the glass unless aggravated to do so or if they aren't given a decent burrow they will dig and a smasher will try to dig down through the bottom of the aquarium.Comment
