So we've had our new puppy for a little under two months (he'll be four months in a week). I hate him...I really do. He pisses on the floor for attention, he doesn't want to walk, he hasn't stopped nipping, and he's just annoying. Sure he can be cute, and he's the "superstar" at puppy class, but at home, he's a nightmare! He pulls my speaker wires, knocks the cups off the coffee table, and gah, won't listen OUTSIDE of puppy class (we use the same commands and everything!).
I want to get rid of him and eat our costly investment, my wife is willing too...but, we can't. My son loves him.
Godammit Frodo, can't you cooperate!!

dogs do not have the mental capability to piss on the floor for attention. Dogs bowels are linked to their sense of smell, when they smell Pee or Poo, it triggers a natural reaction of having to pee or poo. Getting a dog to go to the bathroom outside is really simple, it just takes work on your part. I would start by buying doggy cleaning supplies that destroys the odor of Urine, masking it will do nothing. You need to get rid of the smell completly, Take the dog outside to do his Business all the time. When the dog does something bad and he knows it is bad, do not hit him just separate him from your family. The Worst punishment a dog can have is being separated from his pack. You need to be consistent with him though, When training, use treats liberally and phase them out gradually. As far as taking him not wanting to go for a walk, you have to make it fun for him.

Yeah you need to go to a pet store and buy urine eliminator to get that smell completely out of your house. And always take him outside to do his business. Takes a while, but eventually they learn. Kind of like how I trained our dog to stay off furniture. Took a few weeks, but he quickly learned he needs to stay on the floor like the dog that he is.

I've heard that if a dog pees on the floor seemingly for no reason or in front of the owner it can can mean that the dog is afraid and/or timid about something. That's one thing i'd investigate. Also dogs don't have to mental capacity to delineate between good and bad behavior without some kind of punishment/reward. If your dog obeys your command and does well then immediately reward him with a lot of petting and happy talk or a doggie treat. Immediately after any bad behavior use a firm and commanding voice to say that it was bad and/or swat the dog to the point that he understands that it was not a good behavior that he just displayed.

NEVER Physically punish your dog, It is unnecessary and downright cruel. Hell you can easily train a dog using no Negative punishment, by withholding praise that would be punishment for the dog.
If people took the time to actually read a little bit about dogs before they got one, they would not have any problems. Here are a few tips:
-If your dog does something bad and you do not catch it the instant it happens, it is pointless to punish it. A dog is simply not smart enough to understand why you are punishing it.
- When training your dog to go to the bathroom outside, use the same spot every time. Use a 10'X10' area and just drop the leash and make sure he does his business in that area.
-If your dog is not crate trained, Start Immediately. A dog may cry for the first few nights, this is normal. A dogs crate is its sanctuary, it should be a place of comfort and relaxation for the dogs. It is also for the dogs own good that he stay in his crate while you are sleeping or not home.
- Once your dog is fully crate trained, does not cause havoc when you are not around, and is fully house trained, Then I would let the dog out when you are not home. My dog roams the house when I am away but sleeps in her crate at night.
- Timing is Everything. When a dog does good, Praise it Immediately. If the Dog misbehaves or does something that you do not want, Punish it Immediately. If you do not catch the dog in the act, do nothing.
- Understand why the dog did something bad. Was the act a result of bad Behavior(which is the easiest to correct), Boredom(dogs get bored, When the dog digs in the back yard it is your fault), or is it Ignorance(a Natural dog instinct that you do not like).My dog's butt smells like cookiesComment

So how do you deal with dog boredom? The peeing incident in question, was I got home, took him out of his crate and outside, he went, I went upstairs to change, and on my way down he's sitting in the dining room next to his piss puddle looking at me.
He's "mostly" house trained when he's on the main level, and he's pretty good about ringing the bells by the door (we don't have a pet door). Yet he'll ring the bells to get our attention (like when we eat) and doesn't like to use them when we've let him upstairs...we just rush him down if we see sniffing. At night, no problem. He can go at least six hours if we cut off the water.
As for the boredom, he will not got for a walk. He'll run around the house. Wander the yard and play fetch for a while (until he decides to dig and eat grass at which point we go inside) but when we try and walk down the driveway, he just sits and drags his ***, struggling against us. He walked FINE and then one time my son fell off his scooter on the walk and now he won't walk again.
So, what do we do?
EDIT: I'm also curious how all these owners I hear about NEVER had issues with going in the house, chewing, etc. We don't hit our pup, we use firm, raised voices at worst, and we do clicker training and are in a class. Yet he jumps on people, jumps and licks at the dishwasher, nips, and still can't go a full week without an accident. Stay the course for now, you are doing fine. If he still has behavioral problems a few months from now I would look into a shock collar, They are not inhumane and they do not hurt the dog. Its basically the equivalent to a static shock, it doesn't hurt it startles you. If your dog Chews on something consistently that you do not like, Get some Lemon spray or even Tabasco sauce, dogs hate those odors. My Dog Used to chew on my Xbox live Mic(the expensive one) so The second one I bought I put Tabasco sauce on it a few times( I couldn't even smell it) and she would not get within 5 feet of it.So how do you deal with dog boredom? Like a child, puppies have weak bladders and basically do not know how to control themselves. Every time the dog goes to the bathroom Outside you need to throw a party for him with lots of high energy praise and treats if you like. I assume you have a Punishment word so when he goes to the bathroom inside you use that word. Im sure he will put his tail between his legs and run around the corner. Clean up the Urine with a special Urine cleaner(you can find these at any pet store), this will not only get rid of the smell to you but more importantly, to your dog.

When your son fell off his scooter that could have been traumatic for the dog so now he puts going for walks with something negative. What you need to do is change this, next time you want to take him for a walk, use lots of treats and high energy praise. Your neighbors may think you've gone off your rocker but F em.
So, what do we do?

If you are doing everything you say you are then you will not have any problems and the pup will only get better. Just remember timing is everything and be consistent. Punish the dog when ever h does something you do not want and eventually he will stop.
