Yea I really hate this because I experience it on a daily basis with fake Phillies fans. If you were to ask these people who score the game winning run on a dribbler in game 3 of the 2008 World Series, they would say "I don't know Chase Utley? Who cares anyway, we are World ****in' Champions!" Any Phillies fan who follows them knows it was Bruntlett.

Ask them who started at 3rd last night and they wouldn't have a clue.

I went to ND but I love UNC basketball. I wanted to go to UNC but was a #2 guy for them.

I agree with the loyalty statements.

However I do need to say that when it comes to college sports: if you went there you are more of a fan than somebody who didn't. I didn't go to UNC but absolutely LOVE them, however I say that if somebody has a passion like mine and went there...they are more of a fan. It's their school, they lived there! They are family now.

That's how I feel with ND, it's my family.

Pro teams: I don't have any teams I like, just players.

Meh...it's a discussion against the TOS in one instance, and was, IMO, a foolish, unnecessary pick in the second.

The point was like who you like for whatever reason, and who cares what others think. I think I also mentioned how stupid it is to care about why another person does or does not like a team.

I hate all the idiotic Red Sox fans who came out of nowhere after the first World Series Championship.

Come on man, you've lived in Washington state your whole life and now all of a sudden bust out the ManRam and Ortiz t-shirt jerseys? Get out of here with your fake Boston accent.

            Re: The Hometown Team Debate.

I'm not a Giants fan because I'm from San Francisco, but I grew up to love the team probably because I was so exposed to them (as well as Bonds).

That's essentially how I became a Braves fan as well... it all started with them being on TBS and me learning to love a whole lot of individual players on that team, as well as Cox and Mazzone. But also living in the Bay Area, I do not like the A's. I also don't like the Cubs or Yankees. I think most of it has to do with their fan base, and they all somehow invigorate me so much. Well, that doesn't apply for the Yankees... I just don't like how they can buy themselves playoff berths, but I don't blame them as much as I blame no salary cap, which I don't mind not having.

If you dislike your home team and prefer another team, so be it. Just be loyal and don't be a bandwagoner.

                Re: The Hometown Team Debate.

I think if you grow up in a city without a pro sports team, then it's fair game for who you root for.

I also understand people rooting for the same team as their family members because their parents were from that area or something.

I admit that I do look down on fans in markets who root for a non-hometown team. Especially if they root for a really good team *or Notre Dame*.

I guess that's just a Cleveland thing, though, especially because a lot of kids around this area are growing up to be Steelers fans despite any any affiliation with Pittsburgh. And it pisses me the hell off.

Here in Michigan, I've always been annoyed by fans who love MSU for basketball and Michigan for football. The last 2 years those fans have suddenly become pure MSU fans... funny how that works.

I'm from RI so all my teams with the exception of the Dolphins are based in Boston. Celtics, Bruins and Red Sox. It's weird for me because I could never not be a Red Sox fan, but I certainly don't like the Patriots. It all goes back to my cousin handing down a Dolphins coat when I was little. I really looked up to him and he was a Miami fan. Other things just as important as location play a factor in why we are fans.

I don't particularly like the NBA, so I didn't really have a team growing up. When the Hornets moved to NOLA, I tried to follow for a year or two but just couldn't do it.

LA also doesn't have a pro MLB team, and my dad never missed a Braves game when he had the chance to, so that's my Braves influence (that and The Braves Station, lol..... )

I don't have a problem with who anyone follows as long as they stay loyal. The people I have a problem with are the Yankee (or whoever else fans) who crawl out of the woodwork in the postseason, and couldn't tell you anyone on their team other than ARod, Jeter, and C.C. Some of my friends like a new team every year.

My dad was born in Baltimore and I just grew up liking his teams. The O's, Wizards, Capitals, and Terps. He's a Colts fan, but I'm a Giants fan. I guess I never really supported the Colts because they were out of Baltimore when I was 2, and just ended up taking a liking to the Giants, and I'm from Jersey.

                          Re: The Hometown Team Debate.

I grew up and still am a fan of all my hometown teams, with the exception of Ohio State which is my home state team. My dad was a fan of the Buckeyes, Reds, and Bengals so I was introduced to those teams at a young age and have never looked back. I'm glad I became a fan of all my hometown teams because it's easier for me to watch and go to the games. It would suck being a fan of a team that is far away from me.

I have no problem with people who aren't fans of their hometown team. Just as long as they aren't bandwagoners, which in my experience most of the people I know who aren't fans of their hometown team are bandwagoners. Just as long as they stay loyal I don't see a problem with being a fan of a team hometown or not.

I'll admit I bandwagoned on the Cavs when they had LeBron (and when LeBron didn't seem like a total *******). Couldn't help it. I loved watching the guy and found myself rooting for him whenever he wasn't playing the Bucks. They were in my sig and everything. Hell, he was the inspiration for my first username here.

I would imagine it was the same for a lot of you in the mid-90's when Jordan was around. Outside of the internet related stuff at the end of the first paragraph.
