Re: Thinking About Moving To NYC.
Professa,
I would check out Rockland/Westchester county. Both are within in reasonable driving distance to the city, but far enough away.
I live in Orange County. My father is a NYC FF and communtes about 2 times a weeks. It is about an hour and a half to the Bronx.
I think there is a SafeLite place in Middletown, which is like 30 minutes from me.GT:jb12780

Re: Thinking About Moving To NYC.
I don't see how anyone can enjoy the transit system in this city. The fares go up every other year, the trains/buses are never on time and there are always delays. Add the stupidity of other human beings holding the train door for 5-10 minutes so that their friend can get on, guys trying to sneak on the back of the bus or getting mad when the driver won't let them ride for free, or the spontaneous out of service announcements the MTA loves to make to let you know that you just stood there and wasted 45 minutes of your life.
Don't do it, It's overrated.

Don't do it, It's overrated.Reminds me of the days when I grew up in Chicago. I use to hate that crap when I was high school, which mind you was 90 minutes away from where I lived, I use to hate when I was tired and wanted to get home and some slut would hold the doors open for her thugged out boyfriend and his homies.
Or ride the bus and have some girl open up the back door for her thug boyfriend to get on for free. Mass transist sucks........ I use to hate the summer time in Chicago riding the trains when the AC didn't work. Or ride the buses during the winter time and the heat didn't work. Or see the trains and buses delayed.
People who love it are the ones who didn't grow up on it. I grew up on it and said never again when I became grown.Comment

I didn't grow up on public transportation and I still hate it. Why would I want to rely on anyone else? Forget it.Comment

And yes, I've been to Boston, Washington, Atlanta and Chicago for anyone that wants to ask. They don't compare.
Some may be cleaner or less tardy, but they don't come close to covering the amount of area that NYC's system covers. A broad system like that is bound to have delays when it has 5 million people taking it every day."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Thinking About Moving To NYC.
I don't know Chicago mass transit comes pretty close to area coverage......
North and south it goes to Evanston suburbs all the way south to the Indiana border for the train. For buses it goes all the way to Robins suburbs going south.
West for trains get it goes to the suburbs of Forest Park and O'Hare airport. West for buses it goes all the way to Gurnee suburbs.
In fact......Chicago is only second to NYC for miles covered and the 3rd busiest transit in the nation, behind NYC and DC.Comment

Re: Thinking About Moving To NYC.
I've been here all my life... so I guess my opinion should be taken with a grain of salt haha.
But really, your experience totally depends on where exactly you end up settling down. Momentous is really exaggerating things when it comes to the transit system. Of course every transit system is gonna suck sometimes, but I use it almost daily, and it hasn't failed me yet.
I commute from here to Manhattan on most days, and it takes me less than an hour to do it.
The prices around here definitely aren't as bad as in the city, but if I were you I'd stay away from Condos like they're hellfire (don't know what you're looking for, so I'm just throwing it out there).
Also, like someone mentioned, Brooklyn is basically as good as how far west you are. The farther east you go, the worse it gets.
I could try and answer any questions you have.Comment

Re: Thinking About Moving To NYC.
My bad for missing this. I'm a Repair Tech for a Windshield Company(Safelite). Been doing this for about 2 years now, has good pay(otherwise I wouldn't even be considering this lol)good benefits and they're flexible as far as my Schedule and if I wanted to Transfer, which they are aware of BTW.
Pass on Atlanta since going there will almost basically be like I'm still in DC since that's where people from here move to when they get tired of being here as well. Don't want to go too far out since most of my family is on the East Coast and would still like to remain in driving distance so I can at least drive back every now and then.
Best advice in this thread yet.Originally posted by Edmund BurkeAll that is needed for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing.Comment

Re: Thinking About Moving To NYC.
ATL is still driving distance. Its 8 hours one-way, but its still driving distance.
by that logic, he can move to the midwest as well.

Re: Thinking About Moving To NYC.
I too have been "many places" in my life and I have to say without a doubt NYC has the best public transportation bar none. Maybe the Metro or whatever they call it in Brittan comes close as far as getting around the city but you can't beat NY on that.
Also I'll have to say , being partial to NY mind you, it's a city you have to live and experience. I'll say Boston comes close also. IF you're living the college life, if not then forget it.
But like everyone says, or one in particular, the rent is TOO damn high. Or is it the rent is too DAMN high? lol
But you can get anything you want in the city. That I like. All that being said, I live in NJ as the rent is TOO damn good to pass up and I have a bus that's practically at my front door to take me straight into the city in no time.
Which leads me to the other issue, you have NO need for a car in the city. It really becomes more of a headache than what it's worth especially if you don't have a parking space which is usually extra on top of the rent that is TOO damn high.
But if everything lays right for you it will be an enjoyable experience.Comment

Re: Thinking About Moving To NYC.
Plus, from here to NY is 4 hrs driving and if I wanted to catch the Train, it's 3 Hrs.
And how is moving out to the middle of nowhere basically the best advice in here?#RespectTheCultureComment

Re: Thinking About Moving To NYC.
if you are set on nyc, I'd rather live just outside manhattan like brooklyn or queens. both you can commute 30-60 hrs daily easily and pay a fraction of the rent. my cousin lives in the village now and pays almost 1900 for a 1 bedroom studio.
being a person who used to live in queens and living in NJ now, I think the best value is jersey city or newark. (Hoboken is way too expensive)
It'll be a hell of alot cheaper and it only costs 1.50 to get into manhattan via path train.Comment

Re: Thinking About Moving To NYC.
Found a spot and got a very nice deal one bedroom spot in Westchester County where I'll basically be paying the same there what I'm paying here(paying $950 a month) while living in a worse area than where I'll be going to(spot is in New Rochelle). It helps that I'm familiar with that area since I would make trips there in the past to visit people there anyway.
Right now, it's looking like it'll be August/September when I make the move since I'll be getting my yearly review at my job in July and there's a 98% chance(left 2% out unless something unfortunate happens like dying)I'll be getting a nice pay raise and a promotion as well.#RespectTheCultureComment
