Good luck PPM! I've heard that some of the "less savory" areas of the city are much better now. I've even heard Harlem has made a huge comeback in a lot of ways thanks to development and dollars spent by the Clintons of all people. Of course, I doubt you'd be looking to move into Harlem LOL

Anyways, I really love the energy of NYC and if it wasn't so damn expensive to live there i'd think of moving there or at least spending considerable time every year there.

Found a spot and got a very nice deal one bedroom spot in Westchester County where I'll basically be paying the same there what I'm paying here(paying $950 a month) while living in a worse area than where I'll be going to(spot is in New Rochelle). It helps that I'm familiar with that area since I would make trips there in the past to visit people there anyway.

Right now, it's looking like it'll be August/September when I make the move since I'll be getting my yearly review at my job in July and there's a 98% chance(left 2% out unless something unfortunate happens like dying)I'll be getting a nice pay raise and a promotion as well.

Man you and i are going to be switching places as i am planning to move to Northern Virginia in August...I am born and raised in Ny and I have just about had it..Expensive, education system for my kids deteriorating , and the overall climate of at least my neighborhood(South Jamaica ) is getting back to that 1980-1990 wild west era... My friends have moved out of Ny mostly to deleware, Virginia, and atlanta, and when i see what they are living in for the price as compared to what i am living in for the price it,s time to get my family out of here and live and see a better side of life..My brother has been in va for 10 yrs and finally convinced me to come..I love the area..so good luck bro Westchester is a cool area went to school up there for year..(stay away from Yonkers)lol..If u can aford and want to do it then do it man!!!

From Westchester into Grand Central, you're looking at 45 minutes train rides.

I'll be bringing my car as well but luckily I don't have to go into the City unless I go there just to hang out or whatever and even that won't be often. But in the event that I do go, I'll most definitely catch the train.

Metro North(New Rochelle Station) is like 5 minutes away though and the last time I rode it into the City, it took about 20-30 minutes but this was also on a weekend so I'm sure it'll be different during the week.

I feel you, man. I left for the same reasons. I was born in NC, so moving that wasn't much of a stretch for me. I was always spending summers and holidays down here. My wife, on the other hand, a Brooklyn-bred Puerto Rican, had a bit of an adjustment. But she loves it here now. My kids are doing really well in school, and I really shudder to think what it would have been like if they had gone to school in NYC. We have a three bedroom house that is very comfortable to live in, unlike the cramped two bedroom we dwelled in in Brooklyn, where we had to leave once a month to put down a roach bomb. My commute to work is a comfortable 10 minute drive, as opposed to an uncomfortable 30-40 minute train ride (with the notable exception of sharing the same space with a fine chick on a crowded train. ya'll know what I'm talking about...)

I miss it on occasion, like being able to go see the Mets during baseball season, or being able to scoop up a beef pattie with cheese from the corner pizza spot, or indulging in White Castles on a whim. But not enough to want to live there. I saw pictures on Facebook from the snowstorms up there over the winter, and I DID NOT MISS IT.... AT.... ALL... Down here, we get an accumulation of snow maybe once or twice over the winter. But in a week or so, it's all melted away. I can live with that. Plus, if there's even a mention of snow or ice in the forecast, everything shuts down... EVERYTHING.

It'll be better on the weekdays, but that's not important because you won't be using it during Peak hours.

And you're right, New Rochelle is about a 30 minute ride into Grand Central. Not bad at all.

I used to live in the North Bronx and my commute to work was in the 45 minute mark. I hated it. Nice in the morning because I was in the first train so I always had a seat (bad thing is I barely got any reading done because I was sleeping throughout the ride). Horrible in the evening when there are no seats and you're standing for 45 minutes while Jose stands face-to-face with you having decided that deodorant is unnecessary and the corner bum with more bed bugs than Hollisters on Broadway feels the need to brush past every patron while he sells a book he wrote.

Now I live near Yankee Stadium and have a 20 minute commute. Ah, so pleasant.

Too bad you'll miss NYC in the summer if you don't move till end of August.

Ironically, I had concentrated most of my attention on going to Charlotte, but nothing ever panned out. I went on one interview in Raleigh, NC with this law firm (that I ultimately came to hate), and they called me in finally. I interviewed first around Thanksgiving of 2004, was told that I was the main candidate, my experience was perfect, and didn't get a second interview until Feb. 2005. I finally got an offer and moved in April 2005, right after UNC won the title.

LOL, the fact that the families are so close was the main reason that I moved here. My wife's family is accustomed to being in everybody's business, and I am the EXACT opposite. So we needed some distance between us.

The LIRR, NJ Transit and anything else you can come up with suck compared to the MTA Subway.

And Pack is moving close to NYC... damn man, at least you'll be closer to the Nets... but there ain't many fans here either. Just warning ya bruh.

I hear you - the city can be rough on families. Mine left the South Bronx in 1974(you all know how **** was back then) for Long Island.

I moved back to the Bronx in 1989 to be closer to the city. Like SPTO said, parts of the city are making a comeback. I live in a co-op in back of Castle Hill, 10 minutes from Parkchester. There are mostly homes in my neighborhood.

Until the day comes when my father can't take care of himself(and I have to move back to Uniondale), I'm staying put. I love the city, I can get anything I want, and I don't need a car to get around. Plus it's the place to be in my line of work(graphic design).

Me and my man got stranded in Long Island one night after a party because we didn't realize the trains had stopped running. We had figured that we might have to wait, but never figured on the trains not running. We were accustomed to the MTA where you can always catch a train no matter what time.
