Allow the girl to sit aside for the cheer, or ask what the team thinks. There was no mention of that option in the article. Quoting the article:
The volunteer coach, Toni Harris, later told the girl on Oct. 11 that she was no longer welcome on the team for its remaining two games, Frampton said.
Harris, who could not be reached for comment, told WOWT.com the cheer is a crowd-pleaser and that she had never received any prior complaints.
"I just thought it was best to ask her not to participate for the last few games," Harris told the website.
Nothing there about trying to compromise. The coach just told her to walk and that was that.

Again, it sounds to me like the coach felt the child challenged her, and instead of trying to fix the problem, she dropped the child from the team. That's my opinion.

Whose team is it? The mother of the child? The child herself? Relate it to sports...if you don't do something that the team wants the coach is well within his/her right to kick you off the team. Why is that concept different here? Because a 12 yr old's booty is in question?

This isn't a sport as this isn't competitive. It's a recreational activity to amuse the crowd at football games.

Questioning a cheer isn't detrimental to the team. To the coach's ego, maybe, but there wouldn't be a backlash if the coach came to an alternate solution like those I've already suggested.

I'm the type to say parents are often irresponsible and believe their kids too much over adults, but this situation is different. It's not like the stories about kids in school getting in trouble with their grades or behavior and then blaming the teacher. This girl wasn't doing anything wrong. She just thought the cheer was inappropriate for the team because it made her (and possibly other girls) uncomfortable. The coach could let her sit for this cheer or dropped the cheer (1/40 total) altogether, but instead opted for the "asserting my power" move, by asking the girl to leave the team. Sounds like an overly controlling volunteer coach who just couldn't believe a little 11 year old had questioned her cheer.

Since when is coaching in anything not overly controlling?

Cheering...whether we want to admit it or not, is a competitive sport. Its on Sportscenter during like FEB when only NBA basketball and college hoops are in-session.

Besides, its not her place to speak for the team, and to our knowledge she's the only one w/ an issue. I just hate that we now give forums to these people (the mother), and she's allowed to go onto a morning show and spew venom.

This team was noncompetitive. It says so in the article. The team is ages 5-12 and only cheers during games to please the crowd.

If I was a parent, I'd be glad my pre-teen daughter found something wrong with shaking her tail for the amusement of others. While widely accepted, it's certainly not a requirement.

WTH does shaking one's booty have to do with enticing the crowd to cheer and support the team's efforts? So jumping, moving and gyrating one's *** around while in the crowd will somehow encourage my team to do better? Maybe people are forgetting the original intention of what cheerleading is about? So basically it moved from elevating school and team spirit to checking out my ***.

Yeah, that is a good question daflyboys. Never been able to connect the dots either. My guess, is that sometime during the late 90's early 00's cheerleading became a more "look at my ***," not at the team. I was just shocked that these girls are being taught to do that at 11 years old. And people wonder why young people are becoming so "active" at such an early age. Not saying that cheerleading has anything to do with that per se, but the mindset certainly does.

Well....for professional sports and college sports.....basically yeah. Why do you think you don't see any bbw cheerleaders ? Or any cheerleader wearing bifocals or look like whoopi ?

Or why they wear short skirts and well fitted tops ? It is for entertainment, to get the crowd excited. Is it right ? No....

It is what it is, sex sales. Because really they could cheer wearing a band uniform. However people don't go to games to watch the band, people go to the bath room when the band takes the field.

Only if the band sucks, there are plenty of bands out there that people stay in their seats for and they aren't selling sex, some are though.

This has nothing to do with cheerleading as a high school, college, or professional teams have. This is a young girls squad where you shouldn't be selling sex. It should be about having a good time for the girls and giving them something to do why their brothers are playing football.

If the parent put the child in cheerleading, I don't believe he/she would know to be glad the child is refusing to participate in fliratious behavior.

NFL Cheerleaders you want to see some tail shaking. Yeah we all know that. Even college, but once you start talking underage all you want to see is them hyping the crowd for the team and a few gymnastics. Butt shaking, NO. And at 11 they shouldn't be shaking squat except some pom-poms.
