Not exactly. "Panther" in its broadest sense refers to any of the big cats within the genus Panthera (Lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars). In North America, "Panther" refers to the cougar or mountain lion which normally have coloration similar to their African cousins. Black Panthers are what is termed a melanistic morph of normal panther coloration. These panthers produce a very high concentration of the pigment, melanin, which results in the black coloration.

As for the Carolina panthers, I also don't agree with the above statement that "black is not their identity". Like someone else said, they've worn black since their inception. Furthermore, their logo is a black panther so how could black not be their identity. I for one have always liked the Panthers logo/uniforms.
