let me get you guys opinions on this.I like want to work at Loews, would love to just be able to show up not really "think" too much. I am going to school full time, and Im like sinning my wheels working as a "freelancer" it takes a lot of effort for me to clear per month what I would clear just working like 20-30 a week at a loews or soemthing. And there is a lowes 1.5 miles from my house.

My thing is that im like 30, I was in the army for a long time, got out went to college, so Im like self conscience/ worried about runing into people and them being like "you work at loewes dude? because Im not "college age". I know its stupid, but its the reality. Any of you guys in a similar situation? My wife is telling me it doesnt matter cause Im going to graduate after fall semester, I just have to do it for the summer, but Id really like to hear from someone else who went through this o see if its really that bad once you start doing it.

Im also really interested in working there in general, like does everyone have to be a cashier or do you get hired as a cashier, paint dude, lawnmower guy, etc?

If it's even possible, it's a better kind of retail. Since you're seasonal, it shouldn't be too bad. You'll be answering some questions and helping to load stuff.

I work for Home Depot and I'm assuming Lowe's is similar. I work Kitchen & Bath / Plumbing / Appliances.. so I may not be the best to ask about working in a garden center, but I see what goes on at ours...

The good news is, you won't be the only one hired for seasonal work, so you should have plenty of help. Good luck with it.

They will hire you to a certain department. Cashiering would take extra training because you have to deal with money and stuff on the computer. If you get hired as a lumber associate, you'll likely be here 99% of the time.

Lowes hires a lot of former and active military, it should give you an easier path to get hired. I worked solely in the Plumbing department. They hire you to work in certain areas or to work in the receiving/stocking. I never once worked the register and only had to use the computer to do the occasional special order if there wasn't anyone else free to do it.

I only wanted to work there for the summer before college to make some money, I didn't tell them this though because it would hurt my chances. I told them I would be open to continuing during college. I eventually didn't work there in college a year or so later.

I'm in a similar situation as this. I work at a pizza place, I make minimum wage, and I've been graduated from HS for 3 years while most everyone went off to college. I've yet to step foot in a college classroom (partly by design, partly by money, partly by laziness). As long as you have a plan of where you want to go, this is just part of the journey. If they want to look down on you for working a part time job, you can't stop them, there's nothing you can do about it. I just know inside me that this is just temporary, that I'm going to do great things when I do get back into school and will use that experience to fulfill my dreams. All about your own self confidence and believing in yourself. It gets tough at times, going into work and knowing it's a long road to where I want to be, but you can't lose sight of what you want. My girlfriend has been so supportive and has kept me focused when I get discouraged, and since you're married, I'm sure your wife will do the same.

I worked there back in college. I got unlucky and got Hardware position. I can't tell you how annoying it was to put up boxes of nails, screws, wall hangers, etc. Then worst part had to be help customers with all their handy man ideas....."How do I do this and what do I need".....How the hell should I know, I can't even see your application AGGGGGGG.

But in the end the worst part was re-keying locks and cutting glass.

It is a good college job, but I could of never stayed there as a career.

Ah, I just applied for this position. I just need a job for the summer so I should be able to handle it for awhile, if I do get the job.

I fell off my flatbed yesterday. I landed on my feet, pretty sure they are not broken but boy are they sore. I took today off so i could rest them, Hopefully they are just bruised since I have 4 deliveries tomorrow. Tomorrow is going to suck.

thanks for the feedback man! You know this echoes exactly what my wife is preaching to me, just keeps saying "do you". I think Im going to go for it. Just based off what people here are saying, seems like a lowes or Home depot would be a decent summer job for a guy like me.

"Do you." That's exactly it. You can't help being a little self-conscious, but you can't let that hold you back from providing for your family and being a man. You'll look back and say, "Wow, I really succombed to that." Where if you just took the job, said "Forget everyone else," and end up living out your dream, you'll never have to live with that regret.

So my last day here is tomorrow. Overall a pretty good experience. Got a raise after 2 months and was working 29 hours a week once they finally moved someone out of our department. I couldn't work here long term. Some of the stuff they do seems so *** backwards and it's so freaking repetitive. If you need a summer job or just some part time work I would recommend it. Our store is pretty slow so probably 75% of the time I wasn't doing anything. It is definitely a friendly place to work. I knew pretty much everyone in the store and everyone communicates well. So much different then a place like Wal Mart.

I actually ended up in Tool World, which means covering hardware too, from day 1. I definitely learned ALOT. I knew nothing about tools or hardware starting off and now I am semi-competent in the area haha.

I am going back to Lowe's to work a few hours over the Christmas break. What all does the "front end"(don't be dirty) cover? They didn't have the hours in my old department so I guess they just need the help for checking out. I hope this includes being a loader so I can still just be lazy and do work every once in a while and not be a cashier.

Front end is cashier and customer service. Customer service is cashier plus listening to people tell you BS stories of why they need to return something but yet they don't have their receipt.

Also when you Customer Service, you have to do returns, which means throughout the day eventually everything people brought back to the store, you have to restock it back on the shelf.

I rather cashier to be honest, I don't like listening to people BS. Pay is basically the same too between both positions.

Also, when you are a cashier, you can't walk off either. You are restricted to your register's area.

At Lowes usually a temp person won't be doing returns. Also the returns are put back on the shelf by a person from each department. They will call periodically over the intercom to come pickup your items.

Usually yes a person from department would, but doing the holiday season if it an over flow, they would make customer service restock stuff as well.
