SPC now has a 45% significant tornado risk area on their maps. Highest I ever saw before that was 30%.

 Re: Storm Chasing Thread

I'd like to go storm chasing sometime, but there's not a lot of opportunities around here as most of our big severe outbreaks come via squall lines rather than supercells like in the Midwest.

However, be cautious about storm chasing and make sure you know what you're doing because, while it is very safe if you are cautious, it's also an easy way to get yourself killed if you don't know what you're doing.

I'd recommend taking one of those Skywarn classes the NWS hosts so that you get some of the basics down first.Comment

That's why you need to come to Kansas some spring.

Just looked at the SPC website and it looks like the high risk area got a bit larger since last night. Going to be an insane day it looks like.Comment

Good luck to everyone in southern Kansas and east/central Oklahoma. Great day to tornado chase, but not a good day for anyone living in these areas.Ryan Spencer

 Re: Storm Chasing Thread

Damn, I feel like an idiot.

I was watching the weather because there was a reported tornado about 15 miles west of me heading my way. Power goes out and I lose the signal, stupid DirecTV won't come back up after trying for a while so I go outside.

I look around and check it out, most of the bad stuff went north of me (the reported tornado was at the VERY south tip of the storm). Anyways I look straight up and see some really low clouds and notice that they are spinning. It really looked like they were getting closer and closer, but stupid me just stood there lol.

Anyways, long story short, I go back inside and the TV is finally back up and they happen to be zoomed in on my exact area. Low and behold the part of the storm that produced a tornado went directly above my house. So I go back outside and look to my east, and BOOM the thing has made it's way into a tornado. I could also see two different ones looking to my N/NE I would guess a mile or two away from my house.

I couldn't really tell if they were touching the ground or not, hopefully there wasn't any damage because they were going through very highly populated areas.

This is just north of Ft. Worth by the way. The storm was headed towards the northern part of Dallas County.

Edit: From what I read/hear, the ones that I saw never quite touched ground so they were just funnel clouds. Either way it was pretty scary considering what's gone on lately and them being that close.Last edited by cubsfan203; 05-24-2011, 09:07 PM.Fan of....
