Tornado Rips Through Joplin, MO

Unbelievable. Another large town that gets hit. Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Hospital and a nursing home all hit. So far, 24 dead (I believe 7 at the nursing home alone). I was just listening to the Jasper Co. feed on my 5-0 Radio app and heard they needed 20 body bags brought to a certain location. That really freaked me out hearing something like that.

Midwest is getting wrecked.......Tornados, floods.......wow. What's next for the midwest ? A big earthquake ?

I live roughly 2 hours east of there and all we got were some gusts of wind. Barely even any rain (and god knows we've had enough of that lately).

An EF4 ripped through Fort Leonard Wood (much nearer to where I live, about 10 miles), MO a few months ago, but they were fortunate that most families were away for the New Years' holiday. Mother Nature certainly seems to have it out for Missouri this year.

That damage looks horrible....RIP to the victims and condolences to the families.

The possibility can't ever really leave your mind with the close proximity to the New Madrid Fault Line, though they've been saying it's going to happen for a very long time....

Yeah I saw something on the History Channel the other day (How the States Got Their Shapes maybe?) and they were talking about how Missouri has the potential to be hit with a big earthquake. Hopefully that doesn't happen, though.

On topic: Those pics are incredible, especially the first one with a ruined helicopter. Hopefully that wasn't in the air when it was destroyed. Terrible terrible tragedies lately. Weather is scary, man.

I live about an hour from where it hit, and people in my area were finding x-rays and other items from the hospital. Joplin is completely devastated. They had to completely evacuate the hospital because it is so badly damaged. Several cars and semi's were flipped when the tornado crossed the interstate. The death toll is at 24 right now, but that will likely climb when the search resumes in the morning.

At one point the storm looked to be heading toward where I am, but it moved south and stayed over mainly rural areas. We've got more chances for storms through Wednesday, but hopefully none will be this bad.

Holy ****, this might be the most terrifying video of a tornado I've ever seen (even if you don't see it) because of how real the fear is. You can hear it in each of their voices. The tornado hits around the 2 minute mark.

I actually jumped in my seat as soon as the glass broke and got chills with every scream. Thankfully, everyone was okay.

The death toll is now up to 89, and more storms are headed directly to Joplin.

I had a bad feeling the death toll was going to rise when the morning light hit (and likely keep on going up if the number missing is any indication) .

Strong to severe storms in the forecast all through Wednesday too.

There's not too many places you can live where natural disasters aren't a possibility. The midwest and south can get tornadoes, hurricanes can hit the gulf or east coast, earthquakes are a big possibility out west. You just have to hope that those things don't hit the area where you are, or that you can take shelter if they do.

My best friend's wife is from Rich Hill and I guess she knows a lot of people in Joplin...

So far not too many people that she knew are missing, however if people go missing...that cannot be good.
