1st grade classroom: I just remember getting picked up early and not being told the reason why.

Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

I was in my 7th grade Math Class...I didn't know until about 3-4 hours later though since they did not want to show us.

I think that night when I went to sleep was the scariest night of sleep ever since it was so unknown what was going on.

And yes, I remember everything that happened that day just like it was yesterday, from going to the bowling alley, to sitting in my room watching President Bush address the nation around 8-9 at night, to going to bed listening to the radio, they still had the morning guys on the entire day to just take calls and let people cope, talk about and even vent. I thought that was pretty cool.

Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

Just answered this on another forum, I've read through all the replies so far. They fascinate me. Anyway:

I was in 12th grade, in the state of Michigan. My Discussion & Debate class was just about over. It sounds ridiculous, but there was this cute girl sitting in front of me who I knew quite well. I was just goofing around and touching her back, and I jokingly told her I thought her spine was crooked and suspected she might have scoliosis.

Just then, an announcement came on the overhead from our principal, who stated a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. Immediately, I was confused as to why this was news because I was just picturing a one person biplane. I felt bad that one person had probably died but again, I couldn't understand what made that newsworthy. Our principal then continued on, stating another plane had struck and it was now clear we were under attack. And that confused and terrified me.

Our teacher turned on the TV for us all to see the damage, then our class ended just a few minutes later. My next two classes were Journalism and Independent Study Journalism, so my classmates and I spent the next two to three hours just watching it unfold on television. I still remember when the first tower fell, a classmate somehow chuckled, in a "Dude!" type of way. I never looked at him the same.

As more reports came out, of how there were planes crashing everywhere, I became more and more unglued. I thought the Pentagon was one of the most protected places in the world. I thought there was no chance it could be attacked. And if the Pentagon wasn't safe, then I thought none of us were (even in Michigan). There were even early reports I misunderstood regarding a plane possible crashing into a mall (they were referring to the National Mall, not a shopping center - but I didn't know that).

Eventually I left the main Journalism room to sit by myself in the area next door. My teacher came in and sat with me, both of us speechless. We both knew what each other was feeling, and we both weren't handling it well, and we both understood that. He was a great guy. On top of everything else, many of my classmates were exclaiming that we were at war and the draft was no doubt coming back after something like this. And me, being a high school senior on the verge of my 18th birthday, also panicked about that. Even as just a regular guy in a small city in Michigan, 9/11 really messed me up.

Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

I was in 8th grade. Principal came over the speakers and told us a first plane hit the WTC. My friend and I laughed thinking that it was like a joke or something. After he came back on and said that a second plane hit the WTC, it was fairly frightening.

Other things happened that day that I won't talk about because of TOS but I lost some respect for some of my teachers. And getting home and seeing it on TV...it was freaking stunning.

Also, our Math teacher still gave us a test that day. I thought that was the most hilariously unprofessional thing I've ever been a part of. I should have declined on principles but didn't.

Always remember the people who were murdered that day. These people were not warriors fighting for our country, they were people who went to work and were murdered by bastards. Thankfully, King ******* finally got his, but doesn't take away my feelings. I'm not sure treating these people as patriots is the right thing to do, but I do strongly believe in honoring their memory because of that horrific murder and the millions, even billions of lives it has changed.

God bless all those who died that day. GOD BLESS THE FDNY AND NYPD. Knight, bro, I'm sure today is going to be hard, but you are a man who should be looked up to. Incredible bravery by you and your brothers. I'm just sorry that some had to die being heroes.

Thank you to all former and serving military members here, as well as serving and retired firefighters and policemen/women.

Edit: BTW, I had tickets to the Browns game that sunday and the games were cancelled. We went the week after and the buzz in the crowd then explosion after the Browns entered the stadium when they ran out carrying the Flag was one of the most moving things I've ever been a part of.

Just gotten off of work and it was the start of my weekend so I was playing Madden and I heard it on the morning show I was listening to, "we're getting reports that a plane has crashed into the World Trade Center." They went on for a few more minutes before saying it again, and saying it was true. I went to the living room turned on the TV switched to CNN and saw the live shot of the smoking building then the 2nd plane hit.
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

I had just started a new job only weeks earlier so I came in early that day. E-mails were flying in from all over the office about the events (I saved each e-mail).

We worked in a tall building, so fear that such an attack was going to happen where we were was real with the decision makers in the office, and thus excused everyone to go home. I drove home on the highway and there was a redneck truck on the highway with a humongous U.S. flag. That, was awesome.

Nothing special, it's just weird to me that I started off my career in such a way that it was nearly synonymous...to me.

Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

2nd grade homeroom. We were having regular class and one by one kids were being picked up and the class was getting emptier and emptier. Then my best friend and I were both called to the office to be picked up(our moms are best friends too) and they wouldn't tell us anything, not that we'd really understand it so young.

Looking back, I really didn't understand anything at all concerning the whole situation. It's now recently where I've seen documentaries the actual news footage, etc. where I've come to grasp how big of an event it is. I do have a good understanding of it, but it's still hard to really get a feel for how massive of a situation it was. I think most people probably feel that way too.

6th grade in my English class with my bitch of a home room teacher.

A teacher from across the hall came in and I overheard her say something about a plane crashing to my teacher and then she turned the classroom TV on and they were showing the live footage.

I was just talking to a close friend of mine, who was in that classroom with me and it hit us pretty hard that it's all ready been ten years. Time flies and It seems like it's going faster now that I'm out of high school. I'm about to be 22 in a few weeks and It's got here pretty fast.

I was a senior in high school at the time, sitting in English class when our Principle addressed all of us through the loud speaker that a plane had just crashed into the WTC - the second one hadn't hit yet.

Some left the school grounds right after (locating loved ones), others headed to our library and gathered around all the TV's, speculating. When we saw the second plane, we knew.

Remembering 9/11/01...God Bless all the families who lost someone that day and all the soldiers who help keep us safe.

I was in my third year at Kent State. I slept late that day because I didn't have class till noon. My buddy called after the first plane hit and told me to turn on the news. I was just in shock as I watched what happened. I couldn't even fathom seeing the towers collapse. It just didn't register that it could be real.

I remember all the rumors about other planes and where they were going. I remember huge lines at the gas stations. Like others have said, I remember every single thing about that day.

I spent the evening watching the news with my buddy as his fraternity house.

It took a long time for all of it to sink in. To this day its hard for me to look at pictures or hear about it. It had such a profound affect on me for some reason.

I think about the innocent people, how they had no chance. I think about the first responders and the bravery they showed. Giving their lives to save innocent people.

This is truly a great country. We may not always love each other, or get along, see eye to eye, but when it comes down to it we will die for one another. Every single freakin one the people involved was a hero that day.

I was living in the mountain time zone, in an apartment with my best friend. I did not have to be to work until 9AM my time, 11 eastern. My friend was eating breakfast, I was getting ready for work while my fiancé, now wife, was still asleep when the phone rang. It was my best friends dad and all Rick said was turn on the tv. We asked what channel and he said any channel and hung up. What we saw next will never be forgotten.

The images that stick out the most from that day are watching people forced to choose between burning or jumping nearly 1000 feet to their death, and one news channel showed all the celebrating going on in the middle east. That infuriated me beyond belief.

The one thing about this day is that it adds a lot of perspective, allows us to reflect, not only on the events of that Tuesday, but also our lives since then.

Every year, I wake up around 8 and watch MSNBC as they do a real time showing of the events of that day. I watch it as a way to remember, remember the victims of that day, kind of paying honor to the lost, but to also remember how I felt that day, as we all did. We were scared, but for one of the rare times, we were united, everyone came together. I would love for that feeling to be more consistent, but I doubt it ever will be.

So, I say, take 9/11 to tell your friends, your family and anyone close to you that you love them, and how much they mean to you. Let us all become one again. We may be republican, we may be democrat. We may be white, we may be black. But at the end of the day, we are all Americans, and let that not be forgotten.
