This. Being born in 1989, this was really the first time anything major had happened that I was old enough to comprehend. When Columbine occurred, I was what, 6? 7? I didn't even know it had happened until a few years later, as sad as that is to say.

But, you hit the nail on the head. Up until that day at school, I had never had any doubt in my mind about the U.S.'s invincibility.

Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

I was in Year 1, which the Internet tells me is the equivalent to second grade in the US, so I was too young to understand it all. Due to the time difference I had just got home from school and came in to find the entire family gathered round the TV in silence. I asked my Dad what was going on and he just asked me to be quiet.

I think it really shook my Dad up because back in those days he frequently flew all over the US for business and was due to fly into New York a couple of days after.

Being so young at the time, I still don't think I'll ever be able to fully comprehend the feelings of that day, unlike more recent events.

Was heading back to the States after a 6 month deployment. We were in the middle of the Atlantic and we really didnt know exactly what was going on since we had no tv at that time. We were ordered to turn around and head back to the Gulf where we remained for another 4 months. Didnt see any of the actual footage of the attacks til almost 4 1/2 months after it happend.

I was still in class in first grade. I absolutely had no idea what was going on. I see the majority of my classmates being dismissed while I still sat there without a clue in the world. I did not even know of this event until 5th or 6th grade when we talked about it in history class.

Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

I worked nights at the time and didn't have cable. My mom had sent a mass email out that morning asking if everyone was OK. I replied back with some smart-*** comment, not realizing what had happened.

Then I went to CNN.com and it was all text to streamline for all the traffic they were getting. After reading some, I turned on the TV and saw the replay of the towers coming down. I went back and emailed my mom to apologize for being a smart ***.

I worked in newspaper at the time. So when I went to work that afternoon, it was crazy. I remember telling one of my journalism friends "throw out the rules, the end of the world headlines are applicable today."

Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

I was coming out of some sort of math class I was taking in a community college - some allgebra I think. I was going home when I saw a group of kids and teachers gathered around a Tv. Saw a building on fire and didn't think much of it. Got in the car, turned on the radio, and heard what building was on fire and the circumstances. I was mortified. I drove home in time to talk to my dad, who was watching one of the news channels. After a couple minutes, we both witnessed the second plane on the TV hitting. I was stunned to say the least.

I will never forget that image in my head of the second plane, and of the towers collapsing.

There's only been 2 national tragedies that I've shed tears for, 9/11 and Newtown.

Edit: I will say this... if there was anythying positive to take from it, I was never more proud of our armed services and the troops that sacrifice so much for our freedoms (not that I hated them beforehand). And I am proud to say that that love, respect and admiration has not faded an ounce since and I don't anticipate it to. The events that followed have made me proud to be an American. Our governament may be crap sometimes, and there's a lot we can disagree on with gov't, but this is the greatest country in all the lands.

Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

Got to work at 6am PT in Kent, WA and turned on the news like I always did back then (I had a tv in my speaker repair office). Image that greeted me was a smoking WTC from one tower. I was thinking...huh...did...a plane...hit it on accident? Then as I listened more it got a lot worse.

Actually witnessing the second plane strike the building live was shocking, and I was sick from watching people leap from the burning building to their deaths. To see the buildings then crumble in flames and dust was to witness a massacre.

I was shocked most of the day. I didn't get mad till that evening, then I got REALLY angry but was also profoundly sad for the lives lost and their families at the same time.

Don't think I've ever felt more torn.

I was in 11th grade, but the school year hadn't started yet due to a strike. I was home watching TV, and while flicking channels I started noticing the same thing on more than one channel and that's when I knew something was up. I'm pretty sure both towers had already collapsed before I found out what happened. Obviously I saw all the footage of what did happen. I remember my dad calling me from work and telling me to keep my sister and I in the house.

I was in Algebra class in 7th grade. Announcement came over the loud speaker thing and none of us knew what the World Trade Centers even were. Didn't seem like a big deal.

They let us go home early that day and when I got home I turned on CNN and realized the gravity of the situation.

I remember my Dad was on night shift the night before, so he woke up around noon after we got home. I was born in 1989 and while I guess the Gulf War technically happened while I was alive, I'd never really seen America involved in an actual honest to god war. My Dad comes walking down the hall after waking up and he comes into the living room, he has no idea why we're home, and I point at the airplane hitting the tower on the TV and said "Dad, is this the kind of thing that could start a war?" and he looked at the TV for a few seconds, sat down in his chair, sighed, and just said "Yes."

Was sitting in Animal Behavior class my junior year of college. No clue what we were learning that day. Couple of people started getting calls on their cell phones. One girl the said "I don't mean any disrespect but a plane just flew into one of the world trade center towers"

He stopped lecturing and started a class discussion on what was happening. After the 2nd tower got hit he dismissed class.

It really didn't hit home til they started releasing the videos of the people jumping out of the towers.

Absolutely tragic day and I can't believe its been this long since it happened. I still remember it like it was yesterday.

I can't believe I hadn't posted in this thread yet. I swear I gave my story of this on here at some point.

I was in 6th grade when it happened. I didn't hear about it until I passed a kid I knew in the hall and he asked me if I heard about the "plane crashing into a building." I didn't think much of it at the time. I got home and my mom was watching the news and asked if I'd heard about it. That's when I knew it was serious, but being as young as I was the magnitude of it didn't hit me for awhile.

It wasn't even realistic in my young mind that something like that could happen, I remember my mom telling me about it, and I just couldn't understand why someone would just shoot innocent school kids, it didn't register, and it seemed ridiculous.

But I noticed the effects from it, they started locking the doors at school, and there was talk of my dad becoming a security guard at the front door. I knew it had to have been bad, because this was all happening right after that event.
