Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

I was one year out of college and living in a house with my college roommates.

Anyway, I had gone out the night before was dead asleep when one of the roommates busted in my room and said "We are under attack! TWO planes hit the WTC!" I figured he was blowing smoke up my rear so I rolled over to go back to sleep. Then about 15 min later he came back in and said he was serious and that the news thought it might be a terrorist attack. Everything felt so weird and we kept looking at the sky after hearing another plane was possible heading to the Pentagon. Some of my roommates who worked during the day came home because many businesses were closing. Then when the building fell and we saw it live on TV not a word was uttered and we just sat there in silence.

We were glued to the TV all day and then went out again that night where the normal dance bar we went to showed CNN all night long. Since I was in between jobs at the time I watched CNN all night for a few weeks and will never forget all the wall of pictures of lost loved ones and people begging the camera for help finding them.

It's my generation's JFK moment. The only thing I can compare it to in terms of Where Were You? is when the Challenger blew up and I was in 3rd grade watching it live at school.

I also recall some days shortly after the attacks very well. My journalism class had a field trip to Lansing maybe a week or more after 9/11. I went about my day just fine, but there was something in the back of my 17 year old head at the time, wondering if Michigan's state capitol was truly safe. I had a hard time looking at prominent landmarks and not wondering if they might be targets for our enemies. I was honestly shook to the core after 9/11.

I do recall attending a symposium in Lansing that day on the headlines of 9/11. They showed the various ways with which newspapers and other forms of media covered the attacks. Always remembered this one for drawing the most significant reaction that day:

I was just sitting in my 4th grade class room and they came over the loudspeaker and announced what was going on. Everyone filed into the school's auditorium and just watched it all unfold on the big screen projector until our parents could come and pick us up.

Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

I had my 1st graders ask me about it the other day in class, was a tough thing to really explain without crossing a certain line.

Was a weird feeling just to think about as I was only 2 years older then most of them when it happened

Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

Was 23 years old out of college and at home fighting with my computer that was getting blue screen about every 45 seconds to 3 minutes. I was trying to get my Gamecube preorder submitted but was having a hard time because my computer kept blue screening. FInally got my Gamecube preorder set but was so minuscule about 30 minutes later.....

I emailed, quickly mind you between restarts, my girlfriend (now wife of 7 years) at work and was complaining about my damn computer and on my bedroom tv the news came on that a plane hit the Tower and it was crazy on the news.

Send, blue screen, restart, second plane! I email her again to tell her. The University she works at had them all in the media center. Will never forget where I was that day. My dad was born in 33 and used to say before he passed, that he'll never forget where he was when Pearl Harbor was bombed. I'll never forget where I was.

I teach in a pre - 8th grade school. We had a 9/11 prayer service in the afternoon. And, proud to say, every morning, even since I went to school there LONG LONG ago, we say the Pledge of Allegiance every morning.

If you haven't visited the 9/11 museum in NY, it is well worth the trip. Very emotional indeed. (One light note, I am not from New York, nor Harlem as my screen name may indicate. Just love me some Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon)

Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

Sitting in my 1st grade class room. No idea what was going on... Just remember teachers acting very weird and all. I remember the bus ride home, the driver wasn't speaking and wasn't listening to the radio (albeit on a eru low volume) like she usually did. I knew something was wrong when I got to the street corner and my big brother wasn't waiting to walk me home. When I finally got to my house and opened the door, my whole family was sitting in the living room huddles around the TV with blank looks on their faces... I didn't know or fully understand the gravity of the situation at the time... But I'll never forget they image of the plane hitting te building on the TV screen. My heart goes out to the many selfless heros that day. I encourage everyone to watch the man in the red bandana story ESPN showed recently... Amazing stuff. I will never forget.

Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

I was in Mrs. Parker's classroom in elementary school. I honestly did not realize the magnitude of the event until years later. I don't know any people affected by the day personally, but I do get pretty emotional every year on it now. Though I was young I will never forget that day at all. It's funny that you can remember something so vividly that far back at that age even when you don't completely understand the scope of things.

I was more excited to be getting out of school early than I was scared which is sad, but I also didn't know any better. Now I just sit here and feel so grateful every time the anniversary passes because I've read so many stories and watched so many shows and movies about it that I just still feel like breaking down at times despite not being linked to it personally. It is a strange thing, but it's such an important part of our history and I think the kids that are growing up now need to really be taught the importance of that day. It won't affect them like it does those of us who remember it, but they need to know. Peral Harbor never affected me a whole lot. It was interesting and I understood it was tragic, but until I grew older and was mature enough to fully comprehend 9/11 and my emotions, it never clicked completely with me. Now it does. Now I understand that generation's stories of December 7th.

Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

I was in 8th grade math class.

My teacher saw another teacher come to the door and knock so she went out, came back in with a petrified look on her face. We all watched her in silence as she said nothing, turned on the TV and then gasp as the 2nd plane hit.

She turned the TV off and went back to her desk and just sat there for what seemed like an eternity.

I was obviously not around for what actual chaos 9/11 brought about, but for my students I always tell them if they want to know what kind of chaos ATC had to go through, that someday they should watch United 93. I think that is a very encapsulating film and is really the only way I can ever even wrap my head around how the day's events took place.

There is obviously so much more to the day than that, but that's really where the terrorists catalyzed all of the events that spiraled thereafter.

Cool resource I found on Reddit with archival news footage of the day's events, including what was being covered right before the attacks happened (remember when the Gary Condit story was all the rage?). The wild rumors during the attacks, like the State Department getting bombed, are worth noting. And the shock and horror you feel at watching the Twin Towers collapse...just never goes away.

Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

I was in shop class in my last year of high school (The next day, Sept. 12th was my 18th bday, I'm 32 now). I'm on the east coast so for me it happened real early, like 9AM-ish.

I remember my science teacher coming in to the shop while I was doing an oil change on my 1986 Pontiac Bonneville, and he was screaming "there's been an accident! I plan flew into a building in Manhattan!"

This was just when the first plane struck and people weren't sure exactly what was going on yet.

15 minutes later I was due in my History class, or maybe it was my English class, but when I got there the teacher had wheeled in a TV and we all just watched the coverage completely dazed. It was a sinking feeling to actually see on TV what was going on and to learn there were more planes for the first time and that it was a deliberate attack. I've never been in a classroom again with a bunch of 16-18 year olds who were so completely silent since that day.

As the day went on they let anyone leave early if they were 18 or if their parents consented. I too left after a couple more classes of teachers just wheeling in TV's and us watching. It was a surreal and ****ty feeling.

                              Not the best 18th birthday.

I remember being on the computer before work and had the tv on, it was on Regis and Kelly. It was a beautiful day out too sun was shining and there was a cool breeze. Couldn't believe that only a few hours away there was such evil. It's weird but we can all remember the smallest details when something like that happens.

I walked to work that day and can still remember how quiet the streets where, the busiest street in town look like a quiet side street.

                                Can't believe it's been 15 years...
