5th grade. Mrs. Miller's homeroom. They let us out of school early that day. Was pretty much glued to the TV the rest of the night.

Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

I was around 8-9 at the time so I dont remeber what occurred during the time I was at school (Mississippi) but i very much remember what happened when I got home. I was in between watching the news and watching the original Dragon Ball as it was on tv at the time but I could not stop watching what was unfolding in front of me as the footage just ran across the news channels on when the planes hit the towers and it was unreal and me being young at the time it scarred me. I have an aunt that worked a few miles from the pentagon at the time and I was so scared that we would lose her but she called me a day or so later to tell me that she was ok. Everything after changed so much since then and it makes you cherish even the smallest life moments even more.

Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

Junior year of high school sitting in US History class when we found out that a plane had hit the World Trade Center, but the TV in our class room didn't work. Didn't really think much of it. Was thinking that maybe like a small plane had flown into the building or something.

The brevity of the situation didn't strike until getting to biology and seeing the first images. Then all the rumors that were flying around that day, of multiple other aircraft being hijacked and flying to other places. We didn't let out of school that day, though their were several whose parents came and signed them out. Watched TV all day the rest of the day. Couldn't get away from the coverage.

It's surreal thinking that there are people in school now who are learning about this event in school and who didn't live it. It was our generation's Pearl Harbor. An attack that sparked a war that is still going on to this day.

Two years prior to 9/11, we had gone to NYC on a class trip. I have a wonderful picture of the Towers from Liberty Island. I need to go back there.

Watching a bit of the names of the victims being read ......so many young adults( now) that were very
young kids, or not even born that never met one of their parents. So sad.

You're under no obligation to respond but I know you surely saw a lot of sights and experienced a lot of things you'll never forget. I'm sure over those 2-3 weeks (probably more like months) you were dog tired too. Thank you for your service, my friend.

I'm curious if you can maybe share one story or experience that really helped/lifted you or your crew up. We all think of the bad of 9/11, sure, but I also remember my parents showing me and my sisters an inordinate amount of attention that day as well as the following several weeks/months - really made an impression on us to not take each other for granted.

Re: Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

Walking to gross anatomy lecture hall as a first year medical student. TV was on in a small lobby in a hallway. A couple of us stood there and watched. Went to lecture hall and inititially announcement was made that class would continue. I wound up walking home to my apartment to watch the news. My Fiance (now wife) called me terrified to tell me a plane was crashed nearby where she was finishing college near our hometown in PA shortly after I got back to my apartment.

That day was absolute insanity. I dont think anything in my life thrust me into adulthood as much as that day did.

                    It was months.
To be honest....I don't know if there was anything uplifting during that time.
                    It was pretty grim.
Guys are still paying the price today and unfortunately will continue to.
The "number" was 343(for us of course...much more in total for everyone) but it is way more than that today as a result of that day.

I will say this....the people in N.Y.C.(especially)....but the country and even the world were a tremendous support.
Much more than any of us could ever really express and probably much more than you guys realize.
There were people at the site handing out water and asking if they could help on that very day 15 years ago. For a civilian...that's a lot in that time and place.

I will say two things......after the second collapse and we regrouped....and then finally getting to the zone....it was eerie. I owned a small delivery business before working for the City and my area was lower Manhattan.
I was down there 6 days a week for years......Battery Park City....Liberty St.
West St......Worth.....Vesey....all right around the WTC.
If I didn't know were were standing right there....you could have told me we were on another planet I would believe you.

This one shook me and still kind of gets me.

It was a day or two after the 11th.
I lived in Astoria, N.Y. which is a train ride to lower Manhattan.
Driving was not a real option and getting to the staging areas was a bit tough ....so I thought the train down to the site would be easiest.
There was no place to change or store your gear...so you took it home.(and they said it was safe.....we didn't really believe them but...)...
So I got on to the N train and started out.
The train car was packed and I found myself standing alone at one end of the car with everyone just kind of staring at me. Some were crying a bit.
It felt awkward, but I felt if I just looked out the window I could do it.
An older Spanish women approached me and started saying "Oh, dios Mio" over and over and then just touched me a few times as she began to bawl.
The entire car burst out into hysterics.
I kind of felt like an entity or something.
I had to jump out at the next stop.
I was shaken.(and that takes a bit to do)
                    It was pretty surreal.

I don't know if I've ever told that story in it's entire "truth" before.(I would leave out the touching/crying part and just usually say I felt weird and left the train)

Where Were You on September 11th 2001?

Means a lot Knight. These are the stories that you don't hear on the TV... the real stuff only those who were there carry with them every day. Like you said, what you saw, felt, heard, and brought home is still with you and effecting you. Thanks for giving us a small peek in to your world on those days.

I was young, 11 in 6th grade. So I was fully aware of what was happening but it wasn't as impactful as it would be as an adult today. That day changed all our perspectives. Now terrorism would be the first thought. Then, not as much. It was an accident... until #2 and the rest of the events.

I can't watch the people falling from the towers. I watched a doc where someone described being around the base of the towers and hearing the bodies. Too much. My God.

I wish we could be as united and compassionate as we were shortly after 9/11. The times have changed and the digital age makes you think we're on the edge of the end, but 2001 wasn't that long ago. We've all changed, but we all shared that. We need to remind ourselves what really matters most and it not take a massive tragedy to do so.

I was sitting in Animal Behavior class my junior year at USC. The teacher was lecturing about something. A girl raised her hand and said "I don't mean to interrupt but a plane just crashed into one of the WTC towers." He kept on teaching until someone interrupted again about the 2nd tower falling and the belief that it was a terrorist attack.. We had a class discussion where people got to share their feelings, fears. He canceled the rest of class. All classes got cancelled not long after.

I do remember USC vs Miss State was the first college game played after 9/11.
