I don't have a sliding glass door, but I would probably install both. We have one motion detector that cost extra, but really only use it when we're away on vacation since we have so many dogs roaming around.

Gotcha. My biggest concern is that my bedroom will be on the 3rd floor. Need to know if somebody is trying to break in on the first floor.

Guess I'm overly concerned since I had someone break into my apartment about 5 years ago when I was visiting my parents on the weekend. (kicked in the front door)

Another question, how many of you guys have a sliding glass door entry? If so, what are you doing for security? Are you using motion detectors or glass break detectors....


Got a call that the building permit is in hand, going to be breaking ground on March 11th.

I have a recessed door sensor and a motion detector. The sliding glass door would be the most likely place for somebody to break into my house which is why I went with the motion detector in that room. You should also make sure you have a decent quality sliding door that can't be lifted off the track. When my in laws were broken into, somebody lifted the sliding door right off the track even though it was locked.

I also have one of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...79QG6WQGD338QH that I use when I go on vacation. It sits in the track between the door and frame so the door can't be opened if the lock was unlocked for any reason.

Not sure what type of system you have but I've had good luck with the Honeywell 5898 with my 2gig system. It has pet immunity up to 100lbs which is more than most of the other options I looked at. I only have one dog but I leave the motion detectors active when we're away and he hasn't set them off yet.

That's cool. I think the motion detector that Simplisafe offers goes up to 50 lbs (my dog weighs 63 lbs) so he would set it off.

My dog is 68 lbs (lab) and he hasn't set it off yet. With 2gig you can configure it to send a notification but not trigger an alarm so I set it up like that for the first month to make sure he wouldn't trigger any false alarms. The only problem I had is when he was going up or down the stairs but I was able to re-position the motion detector so it didn't directly face the stairs.

We used to just put a cut dowel rod in the track of a sliding door, that keeps it from opening....If the glass is broken then oh well, someone could easily break a window too, so not much I could do.

I think they said they we could have one dog out that weighted up to 60 or 70 pounds, but couldn't have two unless they other dog was less than a certain weight (which I can't remember). Anyway, we have four dogs now that all roam around while we're gone so I don't think it would work either way.

I believe my parents have motion detection and have a dog and 3 cats with no problems. To me, if someone can manage to get in through a door or window without setting it off, at that point, I don't know if I'd trust your system when it came time to need motion

My grandparents had motion in the past and they'd always turn it off cause of pets....I agree with his thoughts on motion though...if you have good stuff on doors/windows then you'd know before motion was necessary

If you're not home and they smash through the glass obviously the door sensor is not going to go off. At that point, it's up to the glass break and/or motion sensor...

I'm not sure if simplisafe makes something similar but 2gig has a shock sensor as an alternative to glass break sensors.

Ah, my parents have glass break and I will as well, so yea, skipped that one ha. One thing I haven't ever tried with those is what happens if I drop a glass... granted, when the system would be on, I'm likely going to bed, but still could be possible to drop one.

From what I've read, they don't recommend setting it up near a kitchen (most likely place where the home owner would accidentally break glass). I don't really have a choice with that since the sliding door faces my kitchen peninsula.

The other is that you can go over and disarm it. If you have it on no delay (which makes the most sense IMO) then you'll have to answer the call from the monitoring service that everything is cool.

Yea, I have a sliding glass door in the breakfast area... right beside the kitchen. And the front picture window needs it and the living room is next to the kitchen. But yea, you're right. The keypad would be 10 feet from the kitchen so I could disarm it. Would be a good system test.
