Show up every day. Turn in all your homework.

I kind of wish I had applied myself better, but I was never going to make the top 10 so I was a slacker. I only missed maybe 1 day a year though and even as a senior I never skipped. That probably made up for the fact that most of my homework I did the class before or copied someones in the hall way right before. I hated missing days just because it put me behind. Don't think I studied for a single test and usually used spark notes for everything. Still managed to only have one C a year and the rest As and Bs.

This alone will get you through. Our high school system is generally a joke. If you want to do "great" all you have to do is put in the effort.

Make sure the goals are realistic and achievable, though. There is nothing more discouraging than setting unrealistic goals that are impossible to achieve.

Get your support system involved. Tell your family, friends, etc. about your goals and ask if they'll help hold you to them.

It's great that you want to improve this area of your life. Keep finding ways to motivate yourself and you'll be alright. School isn't for everyone, so it can be really tough. Keep your goals in mind and find a way to reward yourself when you complete them.
Branching off of that - when you reach your goals - SET THROUGH them - meaning, go through your goals - don't just land there, go through it, set another goal right away.

As a straight A high school student back in the day and biology teacher of a honors class...it's really not hard to do well. Unlike college, any decent teacher will want you to succeed and give you help if you ask for it.

          1) Show up and DO the homework
          2) Pay attention and take notes
          3) Review your notes
          4) Read ahead so the lectures make sense
          5) Study. Don't wait til the last minute and have to cram. If you know you have a test on Friday...study about 15-20 minutes Monday thru Thurs.
          6) Ask for help and/or find a study partner

I'd recommend studying in chunks. Study for 10-15 min then take a 2 minute break. Then get back to it. Saying you're gonna study for a hour straight is unrealistic and usually pointless. You quit comprehending and your mind starts wandering after about 30 min and the words/notes just start running together.

#5 on gamecock's list is something I had to learn. In HS I could cram, but now if I have say 5 pages of notes to study I will start about 5 days in advance and break it down. Study about 30 minutes. Go eat. Stud about 30 minutes go workout. It will vary based on how much there is to study. That way you put a little bit in your head at a time, then over the course of a week you are seeing it over and over again. I've never had an all night cram session like I always see people doing. If I don't know it by the time I go to sleep the night before, I ain't gonna know it. That's just me though.

Be a LEADER. A lot of times, HS is where a lot of kids are trying to establish a rep. A lot wanna be part of the in-crowd. Once you get older, you'll realize none of that means jack. You will find that for a lot of the popular kids in HS, that was the highlight of their LIFE!

Make sure you get decent enough grades to get into college, because that's really where it's at. Don't worry about trying to impress these young girls, because they don't know what they want. Just be yourself...the girls worth anything will flock.

Just go to class. I had a 3.8 GPA in high school because I went to class, and did the work.

Did I study for tests? No.. That's definitely catching up to me in college, because that's all college is, is exams.

The key thing about studying is to focus and not have distractions. No tv, no cellphone, no internet, etc

Something that should take 15-20 minutes turns into 90 minutes if you start answering the phone, get on Facebook, etc

I am a Senior in High School so the majority of my work is done considering that the first quarter is about to come to a close. However i can tell you that High School is not difficult with the right mindset. I Will never be a studier, nor do you have to be.Pay attention in class , take good notes and rewrite those notes when you get home. Studying is not an effective tool for me as i don't retain much information by sitting at a desk re reading my notes into the wee hours of the morning.

This method certainly isn't for everyone as it is not the most conventional. But for the certain group of people who retain information better from listening than studying it works perfect. My grades are consistently good and I have been offered multiple scholarships.

The best tip i can give you is don't stress about things you can't control. Don't worry yourself with trivial matters and try to focus on the task at hand. If your having a problem in life consult someone about it and don't keep it bottled up. It allows you to be relaxed, focused and gives you the opportunity to enjoy some of the best years of your teenage life.

What you have described is the definition of effective studying. What you are doing will get you through college and grad school. Cramming (procrastinating then staying up late at night) will only get you so far.

Go to class. Do your homework. Study for your tests, if you need to (though I didn't study much in high school). You should be able to get very good grades doing that. I skipped maybe one day in my entire high school career and emerged with a 3.9. No one really cares what your high school GPA was in the long run, though, but if you want to get into a good school, it will help to get a 3.5+, obviously.

College is a different animal, though. You WILL need to study and it will be time-consuming (at least that is the case as a math-intensive meteorology major at NC State). I'm afraid that I learned the hard way. High school made me lazy and screwed up my study habits, so now I am relearning them.
