Obviously not black and white, but I think ones judgement would be different for someone going 10-15 mph over the speed limit who acknowledges the officer and then proceeds in a calm and direct manner than one going 50+ mph over the speed limit with complete disregard for the pursuing officer.

So in my situation, I would not think it was appropriate, but had the cop flashed me and then I started to weave in and out of traffic with no sign that I was event attempting to pull over and in fact looked like i was trying to flee, then yeah, I would expect it.

I see both sides, but as a civilian, it's like you can't win.

Maybe I don't watch enough cops, as some alluded to above, but to me, if some one puts on their blinker or hazards and is doing the speed limit or less after being flashed upon by the police, that would not come across to me as suspicious behavior...it would come across as exactly what should be expected. However, in my personal experience, it is not.
In a perfect world you could voice your side to the officer and he could voice his with you.

If you're that afraid it might be an impersonator you should continue to drive and call 911. Let them know you're being pulled over and you want to confirm that there is, in fact, an officer pulling you over at that location.

The officer will get told by dispatch that the person is wanting confirmation it's a real police officer behind them.

We have people call to make sure real police are outside their door.

Also we've had an officer do terrible things on traffic stops here and it has hurt our department's reputation with the community.

I'm not sure, I'm not a cop, but I have heard it's a "rule" And yes, anytime I do see a car pulled over at night, there is ALWAYS 2 squad cars behind him. I agree that it's alot of time for the person to think, but I'm sure if it was someone more dangerous that came up when they ran their plates, they'd have bigger backup.

If they feel as though that's the best method then more power to them.

I understand your last part but where I work most of the plates I run don't have the registered owner driving the vehicle. So if I make a traffic stop for no insurance there's no telling who the driver could be. They might have warrants, contraband, a dead body, or who knows in that car which could make them a risk.

Like I said all along, I'm all for the trooper pulling over the officer and making the arrest. He was clearly out of line and deserves to be called out.

I would never advise any law enforcement person to conduct the stop the way she did.

Yeah, I think the whole "gun drawn" thing is what struck a nerve with me, and just did not seem right.

Cause then it could have ended messy, especially if that cop feared for his life with all split second reaction and training.

I also must ask, but isn't going over a certain speed make it felony status at that point? I know some states are more strict than others on this statute.

Re: State Trooper stops Speeding Cops

Here is my routine when I get pulled over.
It puts the officer at ease and let's him know that you were either on the job or have family on the job that has told you how to act during a traffic stop.(now I'm going back nearly 20 years, so it might not be the norm anymore)
Believe it or not, they are stressful for the officers too!

Pull over where it's safe as soon as you can(a given)
I immediately shut off the vehicle and raise my hands up and then put them through the steering wheel and then on top of the dash with my fingers splayed.
I leave them there unless the officer wants to see them out of the vehicle or asks me to step out.(we don't here in N.Y.)
When he approaches the window when he asks for I.D. I let him know where it is so he knows where I'm reaching into.(the glovebox, center console...jacket pocket etc.)
It's that simple really, it will put him a bit at ease.
              It sure doesn't hurt.

In NC the only felony involving operating a vehicle involve:

Killing someone (you can actually kill somebody and it's a misdemeanor)
Intentional driving over somebody (assault with a deadly weapon)
                Habitual DWI offender

Absolutely not for reckless driving and/or speeding

Fleeing/eluding an officer is a felony as well IIRC. However that's if you actually get away

Failure to heed to blue lights/siren is a misdemeanor

That's something I was taught as soon as I got my license... I should let the officer know that I am going to check the glove box or center console or whatever so he doesn't think I'm grabbing for a weapon.
