    Re: Highschool Basketball Help

...I can't stress enough how important it is to be thinking ahead. Always be thinking what you'll do in a game situation. I used to mentally play out what would happen all of the time. If I have a clean post on my man and get the ball while my man is on my back, most of the time I knew what I was going to do. Be quick with your post moves. Backing a man down can be effective, but what is more effective is quick post moves that give your defender little time to think/react. That's where the drop step can be lethal.

I used to hit a couple of fade away jumpers on my man, and then they would start overplaying that. I'd spin baseline, fake the shot, and they'd get off of their feet. At that point, I was dipping underneath them for an easy lay in.

Another deadly move (it's tough to explain this by typing)... If you are backing your man down while having the ball in the post... and you have a teammate on the opposite block, a fake wrap around pass by your defender will get them to turn. At that point, you have an easy bucket. I used to do this move all of the time, but you really have to sell it. They think you're passing it off to the other post and go to help out, but you still have the ball. It worked wonders for me and it still does. I wish I could show you a video of it rather than trying to explain it through words, but hopefully you'll get the gist of what I'm describing here.

Get strong finishing with both hands.

Your non-dominant hand shouldn't be THAT far behind your dominant hand. If you can develop your non-dominant hand, that's all the better. I love the left-handed jump hooks.

I could talk about being a post player all day, so I'm going to stop for now... Hopefully you've got enough to build on. It takes time. Playing with your back to the basket is not a natural thing. It takes time and work. But once you start to master it a little bit, you will be a beast. You could grow a couple more inches and reach 6'7" or so... The sky is the limit.
