    Re: Off Topic 2012

The only games that really made me game-rage were sports games. Everything else was/is generally ok. Sports games pissed me off when I was a kid because honestly I didn't care about winning, but I just wanted to play a good, fair game. Of course that never happened. So when I'm leading 17-7 with 5 minutes left and the other team hasn't scored since the first quarter you get lulled into sense of "closing the game" out. To game designers this apparently means something else, which is to have a drastic change in momentum with some idiotic super hero supervised turnover and a 80+ yard play of some kind.

Then of course after you blow off a megabomb on the controller and anything within arm lenght radius of yourself, the parents walk in and tell you, "Its just a game." GTFO.

Anyway, here's a handful of pictures I took on the hike. When I made my post yesterday I forgot about the random Motor Club that passed through the Parkway when we were packing up to leave. 20-25 Mazda Miata's rolled through. I never would have thought there was a Miata club out there, but I guess there's something for every one.

Sweet snaps dude. I'll have to show 'em to my fiancé. Like the one of the hills.

This was in VA? Pretty breathtaking landscape. I guess I just don't really have a mental image of that area.

We went up on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It a beautiful day, too. Sunny, kind of warm with a nice cool breeze. Didn't see any wildlife other than birds and a couple chipmunks.

My girlfriend is having a great birthday so far! Not only is she coming to see me for a birthday dinner (she should be here any time now) but she's just got a job working at a convenience store near Wasaga Beach (a touristy beach area north of Toronto) It's not the perfect job (she's still looking for something more to her liking) but it's better than nothing and at least she'll be making some money.

See, when I play any type of sports game, I try to have as many pillows around me as possible, just in case I lose in frustrating fashion, so that way I don't have to hold back my rage.

How long should one be at a job before moving on?

I've been here almost a year and a half, full time for a year.

There is an opportunity that is near my home, instead of commuting into and out of the city every day!

                  The commute is extremely bothersome!

Is there a protocol I should follow?

Also, I guess this would also depend on my admittance into grad school. I applied to a grad school in the city, and should receive a reply within the next week.

                    I don't think there's a set time limit, really.

I've been at my current job for almost a month and I just got a second interview with Mercedes Benz, a few days ago. It's the same distance, but an easier drive and they pay more than what I'm making.. so I'll jump on it, if they offer.

As long as you attempt to leave and workout a notice, It shouldn't matter. Things happen and no one should ever hold the fact that you want to do better for yourself, against you.

I would say apply for the job and if you get it, turn in your 2 weeks notice at your old place; and tell your employers "Thank you for the opportunity, However I found something that is a better situation for my needs."

You should not feel trapped to any job, if something comes up that might be a better opportunity you take it whether it be easier commute, better pay, or better hours. When you're applying though, let them know you have a current job and need a period where you can notify your current employer that you will be leaving.

Yeah don't ever feel trapped or guilty about leaving a job for another job. You should always do what is best for you. Better opportunity comes along, go for it.

You can do it once maybe twice... but more than that, and you become the guy that doesn't stay anywhere longer than a year. Explainable or not - it makes it harder to find a job in the future.

Just to add to this. I think when you're younger it's more acceptable to jump from job, to job as you are gaining experience and still trying to find your way in the work force.

As you get older you should be able to gain some financial stability. When you reach the point where salary doesn't become much of an issue you really need to weigh your options as far as job changes. I think you would need a substantial increase in position/pay to switch over from a place where you have established connections, and seniority.

It's not the be-all and end-all, but yes, it is a factor.

If it's still really close after taking absolutely everything else into effect, I'm hiring the guy who doesn't jump jobs all the time. It costs a lot of money to hire someone - I want someone I think is going to stay.

Yes, this is true as well. Especially if I see that you're mixing in jobs as you finish school or are in graduate school. That shows a good work ethic. But if you had like 5 jobs in your first 10 years in the "real" workforce, that's kind of a red flag.
