This totally street smart / savvy show biz enforcer / executive I used to work with once bought a "camcorder" (how's THAT for a "back in the day" reference?) in a similar situation that turned out to be an actual red brick...

Last guy on earth you'd expect to get ripped off...

Nobody even teased him about it, 'cause well, he's THAT badazz...

    Anyway:

Bottom line is a quote from my former mother in law:

"Some days you eat the bear, some days the bear eats you"...

Congrats for being supremely human AND for owning up in a forum that could have easily chosen to "pile on" the humility...

Caught for what? Unless someone can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the speakers were stolen then no crime was committed. Overcharging someone for something is not a crime.

        Re: Idiot alert

There was a show I watched a couple months back called Scammed and they showed stuff just like this. Dude selling stuff on the street and people just handing him money.

It amazes me how willing people are to hand over cold hard cash for something they dont really look in to or investigate more.

I'm amazed dudes are still running that scam. I'm not in the least bit exaggerating when I say the same scenario happened to me over in Burbank about 10+ years ago.

But I didn't buy them because I was as broke as a joke that day.

I guess all that's left is to open it up and see if you actually get the crappy system for your money, or if it's just a box of bricks.

Im a sucker for homeless people. I was even telling him that I just had a baby and he still had the nerve to rip me off.

                      No money to beggars. Ever.

I always say the same thing: "I don't carry cash." And walk away.

Anyway, sorry to see this happened to the OP. Anything can happen. Just gotta keep your eyes open.

Exactly what it was when those dudes rolled up on me... a white van.

I've seen them selling "laptops" in downtown L.A. and I know there is just phone books / yellow pages inside of them lol. They drive about in cars so they can get out of dodge quickly with yer cash before you can tear the box open.

The amount of time and effort they put into the "laptop" box with the supposed wrong fed ex shipping stuff on it looks convincingly real.

Pretty similar to what happened to Cam except for the item actually being cheap.

See people fall for this stuff all the time.

If I have a few extra dollars or some change I usually will give money to panhandlers, especially if I just splurged on something I did not need. I believe that morally, it is the right thing to do.

Also, there is ZERO comparison between a panhandler and what happened to the OP. He was scammed while asking for money is not dishonest. Tremendous difference between the two.
