I was interviewed at some company last Tuesday, after having a phone interview a few days earlier. Still haven't heard from them, so I emailed the HR to ask about the status. She never emailed me, but I managed to find her email. If she doesn't respond, I will call her. If that won't work, I am considering going there.

It's ok if they chose someone else, but after wasting a total of 1 1/2 hours, I am not taking the "if you don't hear from us, it's a no-no" any more. I want them to say it. It will make me feel good knowing I made them do it.

This wasn't really awkward, but it's somewhat related to the subject title.

A couple weeks ago, I applied for an opening supervising position at my current job where I've worked since July of last year. After I sent my cover letter and resume, HR immediately asked when I'd be able to do an interview. So I schedule one on a Tuesday morning at like 9:30.

Walk in, head of HR tells me they are considering a few people for the position and they have a couple more interviews later in the day, so I'd hear back from them. Interview starts, everything is going well. They ask how flexible my schedule would be, when I'd be able to work, etc... since I had a second job that I had been working at since February of 2013... Well, I told them I'd be quitting that job if I got the supervising job here, and so then they just simply said that they'd take down the flyers around the office about the open position because I got the job.

I wonder how those other interviews went..

LOL, really though, back on topic... One place I interviewed for, they had a general job posting for multiple positions. I applied, got interview, and during entire interview I was listing everything about myself and education and skills since one of the jobs in that posting related to my strengths. The problem.... The job I was actually interviewing for had nothing to do with any of that. Turned out nothing about me really fit what they were really looking for.

In the end, I got the job lol. Though I quit it after a few months (job itself wasn't so bad, but I hated how I never got back to back days off, worked till after sunset, basically a full time employee with 0 benefits or vacation time, and people there were so unprofessional and inappropriate. Not rude, but being around those people felt like a frat, despite those people being middle aged)

So really you should have just walked away then.

It's infuriating to me when I interview people who claim to be perfect for our job and them come out and self proclaim like you did they never should have taken it.

Just say it isn't the job for you rather than wasting peoples time and money.


Do you really understand how much money was wasted on training you to do a job that you didn't and clearly never would have committed to? I'm really sick of this current generation thinking this is something that's okay.

I've seen you complain about paying for netflix yet your okay with taking pay from an employer for a job your admitting you shouldn't have taken.

That's ridiculous to me.

If you got no other options, you have to take it. A job is a job. Not like I lied to get it. They knew what they were getting into, but they were desperate for help, they hired anyone. People were being hired afterwards too so firings probably were coming anyways.

And I don't remember complaining about Netflix..

So I did email that HR lady (she must have wondered where I got her email from...). The next day I received an automatic generic HR email thanking me and saying they decided that another candidate was a better fit, blah blah blah...

Well, funny thing is, a couple of days ago I look at job ads online and I see that some headhunter/recruitment agency has advertised almost an identical ad for a similar position. It made me laugh. I think it means that either these guys couldn't find anyone who passed their test, and then decided that they better let a pro try to help them; or, they hired someone and that person didn't do well and they decided they needed someone else.

The funny thing is that originally they advertised an opening in late April or early May. Then they advertised again in June - under "Unnamed company" (which I reported this ad again and again until the company finally identified), which means that they had hired someone and it didn't work. Now they're looking for someone again...WTH is going on there?

I've seen companies do similar things too. See it all the time. Companies would rather have a vacancy at a position for months at lower level positions than hire someone and just spend a few days training them to get up to that level they want. Sure, training costs money too, but is it really more than you'd lose with a vacancy for all those months(and probably paying overtime or something on other people to pick up that slack)

Interesting. By the way, the opening was for a graphic designer/marketing coordinator, so I'm not sure it's considered a lower level position in this case.

I've read some reviews about this company by former/current employees, and some of them were saying that it seems like management has no plan. I know they replaced their President/CEO a couple of years ago and are trying to get back on track, but looks like they are still don't know where they are heading.

Which generation was leaving jobs on the table with no other options? Also, which generation was putting the needs of the company over their own needs?

Generation was a terrible word to use and an incredibly broad brush. From my personal experience though, I have 10 times more trouble with employees younger than me than with my employees older than myself.

Experience plays a factor in that too. I should hope an employee in their 50s is more reliable/professional than an employee in their 20s.

Not in my opinion. Age should represent experience and knowledge. Not reliability/prefessionalism. Those are both things you need zero experience to do.

Just need to decide to do it.

There's obviously good & bad extremes in both scenarios, but typically, wouldn't you expect an employee in their 50s to be able to handle things better than someone in their 20s? Not saying it's true of all people, or of all professions, but on average that's how I see it.
