A lot of people don't work in college and in it. I didn't give a percentage but I can guarantee some large number of kids have not had a job. There was just an article in the Atlantic on how cell phone use is changing generations where they mention that the number of high school kids doing things like getting drivers licenses, having sex, and getting jobs is going down as people stay inside and **** around on their phones all day. This is a fact, not an anecdote.

Waiting around isn't going to benefit you but that isn't the issue. The issue is whether or not you knew the information. Until you went out to learn it, you did not know it. If someone doesn't go out to learn it, they won't. It's as simple as that. As soon as something isn't mandatory and requires supplemental effort, you've probably lost half the audience.

I mean a garbage topic because the underlying premise is difficult to nail down. Someone could say it's unprofessional that newer startups don't require their employees to wear suits. What is professional is always changing.

They're not doing internships anymore while in College? Especially while on Summer Break? Or are you saying that they're just sitting around waiting until Fall Semester starts? If I had to guess I'd say at least 50% of the folks that in College currentl or were in College over the last 4-5 years have had at least one job(I'll include Internships to be even more specific)by the time they've finished College.

As for the 2nd point, we just have different experiences growing up in different areas.

And I know about that article as I read that before as well, which didn't tell folks anything we didn't already know.

I'm not saying it's not true, I'm saying I hate it because I know it is true. Don't have that "foot in the door" opportunity available to me so I'm one of those many people companies always pass over cause I have no connections, regardless if I might have the education and/or work experience they're looking for.



HS teachers aren't mid 20s, at least none I've seen(substitute teachers possibly,but that's it). 30s at youngest, but even then, in HS that's like twice your age. Still, they're viewed as older and an authority like figure to you. So stepping into workplace where someone around that age or older is now your peer and not someone who you can really go to for help/guidance like you might've with a teacher is abit of an adjustment.



And I disagree with "old days" thing regarding teachers. Older teachers(and people of many other professions too) not wanting(or able) to retire, hurting younger people from getting that job, and if they do retire, they return as subs, which still hurts younger teachers who are trying to break in to the profession but can't because even sub jobs are filled by old teachers.

You're arguing something different because I never mentioned anything older teachers hurting younger people from getting jobs(I'm curious as to how you came to that conclusion).

I mentioned that HS Teachers(I should've been more specific so that's my fault)or at least most HS are in their mid 20s(25-27 range)but to add on to this, still in that range to at least relate to them somewhat.

Everyone on every campus is fighting for the same internships. Do you think everyone gets one? Some people go home for break, some take more summer classes, some get a job, some try and find all of them taken by other students. There aren't just infinite opportunities for everyone to take. If 50% have jobs, then 50% still don't. That's a ton of people.

I don't think we had different experiences in this instance. I'm sure you know people who didn't take advantage of the things you did and were at a disadvantage. So do I. It's just a matter of understanding that kids aren't always going to do what's best for them, and that leads to not great results. Then the fact that not everyone has a great role model. There are very clear holes that people can fall through, and it's not hard for me to see why.

So I replied saying it is still like that with older teachers and it's probably more true now than before because of them staying on longer and taking away jobs from younger teachers.

Based on when you said you graduated, I'm just about several years younger than you.

1. 2nd part of your last point, that's another issue for another day itself but I don't necessarily disagree.

2. 50% is a ton but it's also more than what you originally said(since you believe that none are working at all up to that point)which is why this discussion is still going on in the first place. You think people are waiting til after they graduate college to get their first actual job and I think they're working or have worked before that point. That's where the issue is.

I obviously don't believe that none are working at all, I worked through college lol. That's why when you said are people working in college, I said a lot of people don't instead of that none do. I just understand that there's a lack of opportunity and I know a lot of people who didn't and couldn't.

I was mostly thrown when Maj got told he shouldn't take the job lol. I can't tell you how many boomers I hear ripping us for not having jobs, now it's for taking the wrong one? Can't win lol.

lol ya. Even though technically I didn't apply for the wrong job, I applied for a general posting. THEY decided since they were so desperate for people, to offer me a job in a field diff than what my education/experience was in. So nothing I did wrong. If not me, they'd be offering it to someone else under same circumstances, so I might as well have taken it since I needed it at the time.

Recently, I was interviewed at some company in the fashion business. The owner is said to be a capricious person and he gets angry really easily. The department supervisor who interviewed me told me he has an office elsewhere but with certain projects he likes to work online at real time. When he tells you to make some change to a graphic element, you'd better understand exactly what he wants, or he gets upset quickly and loses his patience.

I went online and read some reviews about this place, and it appears that he sometimes comes in and yells at employees and also demands that they come in even during their vacation, if he thinks it's needed.

The department supervisor told me that I am expected to log into the computer at exactly 8:30. If I'm 2 seconds late, he will deduct it from my bonus (read bellow).

On top of all that, they offer a bellow-average salary, and promise bonuses. According to some reviews, you never get the bonus you're supposed to get. There seems to be lots of turnover at this place. I'm happy I don't need to work there.

When I see photos of the owner with his long blonde hair, fake tan and those weird clothes (he's in his 70's), I think of Zoolander. It's just stupid.

If I worked there, and he yelled at me, I would probably bust out laughing to his face, and that would have been the end of it. It's just ridiculous.

I must add that I am a punctual guy and unless there is a very good or special reason, I am never late. But it's still silly. You should be able to stay a few minutes late to make up for it.

The place I was at (same as I mentioned before), they did same thing. If you don't punch in and out at exact times, you'd lose pay for a quarter of an hour. Made it worse that everyone used same punchin machine, and took everyone like 20 seconds each, so you'd have lineup of people waiting to punchin from break hoping if your near end of line you don't punch in late.

Not sure if I ever shared this story here, but this was when I just started 15 years ago and was looking for my first job in graphics/marketing field.

I had an interview at a small company (when I lived overseas). I remember it was about 3-4 story building of some sort of industrial or something. I remember going around the floor where that company was supposed to be for over 5 minutes and couldn't find their entrance door. I remember calling the interviewer to help me find it.

I remember it being a pretty weird place. I don't remember what the company was about but I think they were manufacturing something and were looking for someone to help them reach out to clients through creating mass marketing emails and other marketing pieces such as brochures or catalogues.

I remember getting in there and seeing some Russians guys with beards, wearing dark glasses. Then the guy who interviewed me looked funny to me as well (as I can remember). He didn't have much room where to interview me, so we went into what was supposed to be his office or something, but it was just a tiny room the size of a washroom with some sort of tall desk in between us, with hardly any room to move.

I remember he was asking me about my education and I told him I had a degree in this and a diploma in that...but all he cared about was that I had a high school diploma and asked what high school I went to. When I tried again to tell him about my higher education, for some reason he kept going back to high school...

Then he explained what they were looking for, and I asked what kind of computer programs they were using there (like graphics programs, and even asked about some specific programs), and he said: "What programs do you have? Whatever you have, bring it here and we'll us it".

Then, eventually I asked about salary, and he said something like: "Ummm....you know what, you'll start and we'll see how it goes and then we'll see how much we can pay you".

The funny thing is that during the interview itself, I kept imagining in my head how I later talk to my buddy and tell him all about it and we laugh really hard. I remember thinking that I had to remember every detail so I can tell my buddy about it because it was hilarious.
