      Watch some porn.

No, seriously, watch some porn, relieve yourself, then keep watching it.

Nothing will make your interest faster (IE put you to sleep) than watching porn when incapable.

Or, you can find a sex ad (I usually watch Extenze) on youtube (or tv) and watch the entire duration of it as they give "witness testimonies". Puts me right to sleep.

OR, or, you could go on netflix, find your favorite tv show, and watch it. Eventually you will come to the part in every episode where the characters DO NOTHING. They don't advance the plot or they don't give backstory (Or if they do it's incredibly dull). That'll make you sleepy in a hurry.

Sometimes you can fall asleep from watching too many good episodes in a row and you figure you wanna be lucid so you can actually analyze them with some sembelance of brain power, so you fall asleep.

Hopefully one of these help. All 3 have worked for me on occasion. Especially option 1............

Agreed with the guys who have recommended melatonin. I got a promotion back in May of 2010 that required me to go to overnights. The first month I was MISERABLE. Couldn't sleep for the life of me.

Of all people, my landlord recommended melatonin. First day I took it, I got the best 8 hours of sleep i'd ever had from 9am to 5pm. Ever since then, I don't go a day without it. Within 30 minutes of taking it, i'm ready for bed. Not a crazy 'holy crap, I need to lay down or i'll fall asleep standing feeling', but just a tired, 'it's time for bed' feeling.

Not to mention (although I don't recommend it), I usually have some whiskey in the morning before the melatonin. The combination of the two leads to some CRAZY vivid dreams.

Just a heads up for the guys who say "I don't like to sleep". Lack of sleep is hard on the body and can knock off years from your life. Stroke, heart attack, and high blood pressure all increase with lack of sleep. Just a heads up if people didn't know

Ohhh and I am going pick up some Melatonin today!

I've never had trouble with sleep. So I have wondered if going for a run or exercising during the day would help the non-sleepers. I also wonder if the non-sleepers could use this time to catch up on their classical literature. Some of those epics and novels ought to put you to sleep, no? If not, you'll gain some significant knowledge.

Are you trying to imply that people who have a hard time sleeping are a bunch of overweight couch potatoes ?

Absolutely not. I find that whenever I do these things, they drain all of my energy and I have no choice but to sleep. My body sometimes feels like it shuts down. I mean, the more energy you use, it eventually forces you to sleep or pass out. Just wondering.

Actually GMSS he is correct, working out helps sleep. Combination of effects, which you can google till your hearts content.

I am an insomniac by choice, for better or for worse.

I don't have trouble falling asleep, usually, I just don't go to sleep!

I'll weigh in here too. Can't say I've ever gone and did a sleep study to determine if I'm an insomniac but I have done the whole laying in bed staring at the ceiling act pretty good in the past. It's mostly my over active brain that keeps me awake. Always analyzing the day that has just passed and looking to the days ahead.

Drugs like Tylenol PM just make me feel like ****s the next day and don't really slow my brain down either.

Melatonin on the other hand does have a calming effect which really does help but doesn't give that next day head in the clouds feeling. For anyone still on the fence do yourself a favor and try it.

The best thing I've found in the last year or so though is meditation. It calms my body and mind and has had a seriously positive impact on my life. I'm not going to get into the whole religion/beliefs things here on OS but meditation doesn't have to be about that anyway. Just offering another alley for people suffering sleepless nights.

Sleep is overrated. I get the most school work/studying done after 2am. That's the only time the world is quiet enough for me to get stuff done.
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

This is not true. Sleep is not overrated. Lack of sleep will take it's toll on your body, increasing the chances of a stroke, heart attack and other medical and psychological conditions. Getting a solid 6-8 hours of sleep a night is one of the best things you can do for your mind and body.

For those having trouble sleeping here are a few sleep hygiene tips:

Use your bed for sleep and sex only. Try not to watch tv, eat, etc in your bed.

No eating before bed or if you do need to eat make it a light snack. Avoid proteins and stick to dairy and carbs.

Try to avoid fluid intake a hour or two before you go to sleep.

Exercise is important, but not before you go to sleep.

Attempt to avoid caffiene 4-6 hours going to bed. Same for nicotene and alcohol.

Avoid naps throughout the day and if you nap keep it short in duration.

And lastly, meditation before going to sleep can help clear your mind.

Exercising is great for sleep. If your body is drained you almost have no choice but to knock out.

It's generally recommended that you don't exercise right before going to sleep. But everyone is different. I have no issues sleeping after exercising.
