Shooting at Sikh temple in Wisconsin

At least four people were shot just before 11 a.m. at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek Sunday morning and a police SWAT team entered the building before noon and brought uninjured people out of the building at 7512 S. Howell Ave.

Among those who were shot was the president of the temple.

People were in the temple as early as 6:30 a.m. Sunday and many more were arriving for a service that was to begin about 11:30 a.m.

There were reports that children were taken to the building's basement after shots were fired.

Someone who sent a text message to a Journal Sentinel reporter shortly before noon said that there were two shooters with children possibly as hostages.

And the head priest was locked inside a restroom with a cell phone and that there were as many as 20-to-30 victims.

Oak Creek police were not giving out any information at this point.

Numerous police agencies had responded to scene to assist Oak Creek, including the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

As of about noon, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office said it had not been called to the scene.

Meanwhile, Brookfield police officers were dispatched to the Sikh Temple at 3675 N. Calhoun Road as a precaution in the aftermath of the Oak Creek shooting.

At least three squads were at the temple in Waukesha County.

About 50 people were at the Brookfield temple for a morning service and many of them went outside after they learned of the shooting in Oak Creek.

Re: Shooting at Sikh temple in Wisconsin

A shooting at Sikh temple in the Milwaukee suburb of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, on Sunday, left at least three people wounded and one gunman killed by a police officer, authorities said.

The officer was wounded but "returned fire, and that shooter was put down," said Bradley Wentlandt, the police chief in nearby Greenfield, who briefed reporters. Wentlandt called it "an ongoing and very fluid situation."

"At this time, we don't know if there are additional shooters inside the temple," he said. SWAT teams were combing through the temple, he said, and he urged television stations not to show aerial footage of the operation while it was under way.

The officer was sent to the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek, south of Milwaukee, after a 911 call about 10:25 a.m. (11:25 a.m. ET). He killed his attacker despite being shot "multiple times," and is expected to survive, Wentlandt said.

Some people are believed to be trapped inside, and at least one gunman may still be inside, Alderman Dan Jakubczyk told CNN.

"As far as I know, it is still an active situation," Jakubczyk said.

It's a sad day in this country when a person can't be safe in their place of worship.

The attack on religion continues in America. Thoughts and prayers to all those involved in the mass shooting at the Sikh temple.

The police killed the guy who had hostages but I don't know if the guy who shot at the police officers was killed or not.

Very sad news. It's getting to the point where I'm no longer surprised by the sick stuff people do...kinda scary to think about it.

This is different, way to early to pinpoint a motive but I would bet my bank account that this guy thought he was fighting the War on Terror at home.

SMH if the guy thought Sihks were Muslims.......

That would be the ultimate bout of ignorance that would add to an already horrific tragedy.

Sadly this was my first assumption. It was some a-hole who thought he was doing his role in the war on terror and was attacking Muslims.

If this turns out to be the case I would not be surprised. Too many ignorant, uneducated, yokels out there, who are easily influenced by divisive and hateful speech.

Unfortunately, there has been a pattern of incidents against Sikhs in this country since 9/11. It's not something to be ignored.

Regardless, it's not something that should be discussed on OS.
