There is a lot wrong with the current generation growing up but it's almost totally trumped by what Areobee just said. This is the generation that will almost assuredly eradicate overt racism and be more tolerant of others no matter their status in this world.

That's something to be proud of though I still wish they'd show a little more backbone and responsibility. I think a lot of those problems come from the latchkey kid generation that's basically over-compensated for them being left on their own and so they bubble wrap their kids to the point that they're almost helpless. I do see the pendulum swinging in another 30 years as the current generation is going to be a lot more relaxed from that point of view as they'll remember how stifled they were as kids and the following generation will be the best of both worlds, responsible, smart AND tolerant.

The sad thing about it, those who "stand out" and make their own decisions are the ones that get **** on. You can't have a different opinion without being attacked anymore, in real life, over the internet. This place is no different.

All you can do is keep on doing what you do, and **** everyone else.

That's the easiest thing to do.

I don't think it's any worse than other generations. The technology thing is really the main difference. Things that were popular and trendy in school when I was growing up were just as ridiculous as anything today (think parents buying their kids thousands of dollars worth of beanie babies for their collections, pogs, tamagachis, furbies, parents brawling over tickle me elmo's in Wal-mart)

The one thing I can't figure out is the skinny jean thing though. You could take the most luscious woman with a perfect physique...put them into a pair of skinny jeans and they instantly look awkward and less attractive.

I agree with your general sentiment (and others who also believe every generation has their own similar "follower" traits). Whoever mentioned the Bieber, Backstreet Boys, New Kids on the Block correlation is right on the money. It's always been there.

For kids in high school, I really do think it's a little bit easier to follow than not. When I was in school, there were definitely some people who could just seamlessly pull off being whoever they wanted to be. But for a lot of folks, there was a lot of insecurity with who they were and thus a constant yearning to become more liked, more popular, and generally received more favorably. And to a teen (and often to adults just as well), the path toward acceptance often seems to be conformity. For me, a lot of the times it was looking at the guys it seemed like had the most ladies flocking toward them, then trying to imitate how they acted or what they wore.

The good news is I think a lot of people break free of their conformist behaviors (at least on some level or another) as they near the end of high school. There's often a crossover where at some point a lot of the 17 or 18 year olds recognize and realize we're all different and weird and a lot of times, those differences can be the most fascinating things about us. Then again, some people will never get that message and they'll go through life living in their own little cliques, judging everyone else who's not like them.

To come back to your statement though, Freak47, I was just discussing the concept of skinny jeans with a friend of mine two weeks ago. I fully acknowledge my lame fashion trends over the years (ex: $30 t-shirts branded with "Abercrombie & Fitch in 1999) but I struggle to accept a concept that seems so... troublesome. By that I mean, skinny jeans seem difficult to wear. Is this true? Or do they stretch at certain locations to ensure speedy application and removal? Baggy jeans may have looked equally ridiculous, but I bet they were a little more functional.

You are upset at this generation at continuing precedent of human nature? As much as any of us thinks they are standing out, or being different, you are probably overestimating your unique-ness... by a mile.

I just think the kids of today need to lighten up, for the want of a better phrase. That and they need to stop trying to grow up to fast.

I can't go on my twitter or Facebook without seeing:
1) Some stupid instagram or tumblr photo with some idiot wearing a Snapback with some stupid, soppy, relationship quote written over it.
2) Some photo of someone with a serious illness, and someone who has written over it with "Like/retweet if you care, keep scrolling if you don't care/want to go to hell". Who the hell do you think you are to decide if I care about a serious condition or not, purely based on whether I bowed to your attempt to fish for likes or retweets? Sod off.
3) Some teenager (I'm talking younger mainly, i.e. under 17/18) posting some irrelevant song quote from an artist who most likely has less talent/ imagination than one of my turds, with a quote like "so truee omg <3", or having a massive argument with their bf/gf for all the world to see, splitting up and then claiming "omg my lifee is over". Sit down and put a sock in it. Sheesh.

I know it looks odd, me telling people to lighten up after going on a rant and whatnot, but I'm trying to make the point that kids these days seem to be so dramatic all the time, with relationships etc. Am I alone here?

#2 are facebook pages that are trying to get a high traffic count so they can sell them to advertisers. There was an article I read about it the other day. Seriously sick IMO...also extremely annoying.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.(another reference nobody in my generation would get.)

I thought I was a lot more cultured than other people my age, but I don't get the reference. I hope that doesn't mean I'm one of them now.

I think this generation's identity will show up later. Hopefully not like how I look at the 90's as crap (maybe grunge, the steroid era, and Titanic make me feel that way, but I would so much rather live in the 70's or 80's than the 90's). I mainly don't conform to whatever's going on here, but not because I am against conformism (although I am), but because what's popular is incredibly unappealing. The movies out are rarely intriguing, music is downright awful, I don't understand obsessively texting every minute of every day, and to address a couple of sports points, I root for my crappy teams as much as I root for my teams that are doing well, and I think that Nike is the antichrist of uniform design.

That's not to say there aren't a few things about modern pop culture that aren't bad; just there's so little, and it's so hard to find, it barely qualifies. And it certainly doesn't mean that there's stuff from past decades in pop culture that weren't huge mistakes - there was an entire Tom Cruise musical about one released this year - but the high points back then were so much better than today's high points, with very few exceptions.

As someone who's part of this generation...

Like some other people have said, it's not that this is the worst it's ever been. It just appears that way due to social media. However, I will agree that we're unbelievably stupid.

And to chime in on the facebook idiocy, the first few things in my newsfeed this second are one of those, "BESTIES LIEK OMG" pictures, some fool hacking some other fool's account, and saying, "____ is so sexy like derp yolo swag," and someone giving a random update no one cares about.
