Was this a job where he hired you to do one thing and then refuses to let you actually do what you wanted? In the back of my mind I remember someone at OS talking about that.

If so, I'd just give your 2 weeks notice and be nice about it, but firm. Just get out of there ASAP, especially if you can find a new job.

I was going to say what Jeremy said.

Tell him everything you said in your post but tell him you are telling him early so he can get someone you can train.

You guys seem to have a good relationship and its not your intention to leave him in the dark.

Good luck in your future endeavors!

I don't know. Can't recall if I've talked about my job here

Thanks, guys. I feel better about it already. I'm thinking telling him sooner will be best. Two weeks before December 1st is the plan.

I still want to make sure I have some jobs and gigs lined up.

Just keep it short and sweet.

Thank them for the 5 years, but say you're ready to move on at the end of the year. Nothing personal....just business.

Make it as painless, but crystal clear as possible.

Nice. The #1 rule about voluntarily leaving a job is to make sure you ALREADY have another job(s) in the bag first.

This thread helped a lot. Just reading thoughts gave me more confidence in knowing this is the right move for me, and I feel more comfortable saying that to him.

              Appreciate the comments, guys.

Let us know how it goes, CMH.

I'm in the same situation you are, I'm one of three people in my company and they'll be in a major trouble when I leave, but it's time for me to move on. I imagine my boss will not take it well but oh well, you always have to look out for yourself first.

Yeah, you know the situation well, and looking out for you is most important. That's the thing I keep going back to because if not I'd let guilt get in the way and sit in a position I know isn't working for me only because it works for someone else.

I'm glad I made this thread because I would have felt like a jerk with my timing. The hurricane took down the home of one of our employees. She was in many ways his assistant for things I stopped doing a couple years ago. But she's pretty much shut down right now as she picks her life back up.

Of course, that means he's short handed there and though he hasn't necessarily thrown her stuff at me, I will need to pick up some of that because some of it is necessary to get my work done. And of course, I'll likely be exiting while she's still recovering meaning it's only going to compound his issue.

I plan to tell him in the next week, though I might be away for business travel next week, which means it'll be pushed a day or two.

Honestly, me thinks you should visit the OS unemployment thread, read through it a bit, then decide if you want to still go through w/ it.

Nothing wrong w/ setting your boundaries and discussing w/ your boss in more direct but still professional ways that your workload is too much, and he needs to be more assertive in getting you some help.

I don't know what it is you do currently.

I can say that I am the spouse of a teacher, my wife has taught for about 8 years. Its not exactly a profession w/ people dying to get into it. Aside from summers off, I can't really think of any benefits.

Job security is definitely not a given.

Should the enrollment numbers in your county/township go down, the teacher w/ the least seniority will get de-staffed and either takes a teaching jon perhaps on the otherside of the county, is forced to take part time, or has to go between two different schools to gain full time hours.

Unless this is some childhood dream to be a teacher, then I would say people sort through your issues w/ your current job and be more direct/assertive.

Would sound like your chummy chum relationship w/ your boss may be getting in the way of progress.

Ha. Not burnt out. I'm not doing what I want to do at this position.

Any aggravation I might have is directed at knowing that when I go to work in the morning, I'm not doing anything I enjoy doing.

That's all this is about, really. I want to be a free agent again and work on set gigs. Won't be hard for me to figure out.

Maybe you're trying to read between the lines? I don't know. None of the above applies to me but I do appreciate the feedback because it at least made me ask myself if it might.

Definitely don't want to make a decision based on what you said. I think it would be a bad move.

You won't need to work that much. But if you're serious, PM me. Seriously. If I can help someone that qualifies find a job, I will.
