How is playing video games any worse than watching TV, screwing away hours on Facebook, the internet, etc.? Is playing video games a productive use of your time? Perhaps not, though some video games can be. However, most of these other activities aren't, either.

Re: criticism of your maturity and video games
As a past single Dad, video games were all I really had. I couldn't just go to the gym, bar, community center or anything, I had a baby girl at home. They became my entertainment and stress reliever. Later on they became something that my daughter and I could share and spend time together doing. As my daughter got older and busier it became our together time and we would both find time to play together.
Now I am married and have been blessed with a wife that loves video games as well and we have played many hours of Borderlands 2 together. My wife has three older kids and they all love video games as well, so it is still something we can share as a family.
On a sadder note, now that my daughter has passed. I find myself playing the games she loved and had not finished. It helps me feel closer to her and not quite so alone without her.
So if video games are immature then so be it, I am happy, my family is happy and we don't care about the perceptions of others. In Loving memory of my "Cricket" 1/2/96 - 11/19/2012

I'm 30, and play videogames, and my hot 24-year-old wife does that same.

Re: criticism of your maturity and video games
I don't get the people who bash someone for playing video games. To me, going out to the club/bar and getting drunk is a lot more immature than staying at home and playing video games, yet no one seems to have a problem with the bar hoping. It's just another hobby... I really don't understand those who
I've always told my wife I will probably be playing video games with our grandchildren.Comment

Re: criticism of your maturity and video games
Yeah you shouldn't care about what people think of you but if you're playing 2-3 hours a day your wasting time IMO. Couple hours a week cool beans, game away.
We all have potential to become great at something but how can we when we don't work our way to become great and live our dreams. Playing video games does not help you become better at anything but playing that video game.
Some posters here won't like my opinion but its the truth. Can you honestly say that a video game has changed your life for the better? Hey if your a 4.0 student, making millions, the best shape your body can be or mentor youth in your community and you still can play 4 hours a day then man keep on gaming.
But if you are not where you want to be then you have to see where you are wasting your time. Not here to bag on anyone's hobbies but obviously the OP is questioning what he is doing is right or wrong and I'm providing my insight on it.
Take the hours you spend on a game and use it to make a difference for yourself, your family and your community and those by far are greater achievements than anything you get from a game.Comment

I'm sorry to offend anybody that was not my intention. I don't know you personally so I don't know how you want to run your lives. If you truly are happy with your situation right now and you are living your dream or working towards it and you still have time to play games, then by all means do what makes you happy.
But if you have that doubt in your mind that you could do more or be more then what is stopping you?
This topic is just about video games. Throw on top the sports, tv/movies and the internet we put hours into as well. How many hours of entertainment do we need?
I just stopped 1 of those which was gaming and I accomplished so much this year. Now I'm realizing I need to cut more of it.
I would have never lost 70 pounds and reversed diabetes, successfully sell my two properties, or even consider moving out of the country to open a business if I didn't make the sacrifices that I did.
And dookie, you may think I wasted time writing that post but I don't think I did. If I convinced one person to put down the controller and do something new that they never done before and get out of their comfort zone then that's an achievement I'll take. You'll be surprised of new things you thought you would never enjoy become something your passionate about.
OS will be next of the things I need to cut down as well. I do spend a lot of time on here too and been here for 10 years. I can say is that OS does actually help and was part of what helped make my turn around so I'll continue to post in all the fitness and motivation threads.
This is a great community of guys that share their lives with strangers and definitely has helped change my life over the years. This is my contribution. If I can turn around my life then anyone else can.
Again I'm not intending to offend anyone. If your passionate in what you do with your free time then why do you care what I think right? If there is doubt then I recommend stepping back and analyzing your situation and figure out what you can do to become better and what you need to cut out so you can reach your goals.
If you guys want a challenge, stop gaming for 1 month and pick up a new hobby and see what happens. Maybe you can make 2013 an unforgettable year.
Thank you and Happy New Year to everyone.Comment

Re: criticism of your maturity and video games
My other hobbies are too expensive.. lol.
Trail riding Jeeps, nitro RC cars, target shooting, etc.
It's easier to suggest getting out and being adventurous when you're more financially capable of doing such things.
If staying home and playing games some nights means that I can continue to save to get out on my own and support myself, then I'll continue to do it. Especially if it's gaming with some of my friends.. that's time well spent.
I just don't see what there is to do after 11pm at night, outside of being entertained by some TV, games, a woman, etc.
If a night of gaming is in the cards, then so be it.Comment

Re: criticism of your maturity and video games
I'm 33 and play way more games now than I did in my twenties.
When I was younger I spend the majority of my free time chasing tail or at bars. Neither my wife or I have any children, we both work 8-5 jobs and she has her own hobbies. I don't drink, the majority of my friends and family live 100's of miles away and I workout 4 days a week. Although, that's all during my lunch break.
That gives me about 5 hours every night to do whatever I want. So usually I spend the majority of my time watching TV, playing video game or playing with my dogs. This doesn't even take into account all of the free time that I have on the weekends. Honestly, I couldn't be happier.

I think it's also worth mentioning that it's the middle of winter, right now.
Most everyone is spending their time indoors, at night. If I leave my house, I'm going to someone's house, the gym, or a bar..
Gaming can be enjoyed, regardless of the weather outside.Comment

Re: criticism of your maturity and video games
Your going onto a Video game website and telling people they are wasting time in their life. The difference between a troll and yourself is that your choice of words is much better. This is one of those times were you either keep your thoughts to yourself or find another forum. If I joined a Movie or TV show forum then told those people they were wasting time, I would be labeled a troll.
You sound like a nice person but I would suggest finding another forum that fits you because OS obviously does not.
I could point out some great examples, but I won't because I don't want to bring up specific member's struggles with life. I can tell you that some people, including myself, have benefited from some great advice and people to lean on, when they need someone to turn to other than their family.
OS started with gaming and has evolved into something so much more, especially for those of us who spend a lot of time around here. This place helps me get through the work day.Comment

Re: criticism of your maturity and video games
I haven't been here since the beginning of time like some of you, but I think you're way off with this. OS is about more than gaming. If someone's interest happen to change over a 10 year period, which is very likely to happen with everyone to some extent, they shouldn't just "find another forum" to join.

I also agree partially with CuseFan as well though. This site is still very much a part of the gaming community and really without OS how many of us would have find out about GREAT games like X-Com? The Walking Dead?
How many of us were on the fence about purchasing something...but another OS'er convinced you to get it (and it turned out to be the right decision)?
I would like to point out that this site is MOSTLY about entertainment in some shape or form (whether through personal observations and issues (Off-Topic), tv, movies, sporting events, games, etc). Why even bring up gaming into the discussion and how some people need to cut back on it? It doesn't make any sense. We're all adults here (most of us) and we all either have jobs or are in college. That means we are being productive with our time and either trying to seize a better opportunity or set ourselves up to grab said opportunity.
Now I will say when OS really shines is when it supports its members through difficult times. You want to know why OS supports its members like that? Because they've bonded in a way through entertainment. They know those guys through the baseball forum, the football forum, the WWE forum, the NBA forum. Some of them they play with daily over PSN or in Xbox Live parties. How many of us know each other through Madden and NCAA leagues? Hell, they probably even know either other in real life and exchange emails and phone numbers.
What I'm saying is, that while he had good intentions (and he should just exclude himself from the gaming section if that's how his life is shaping out to be. He doesn't need to disappear from the forum entirely, that was just harsh), it also made no sense whatsoever to bring that discussion up.Comment

So.. what are you suggesting people do to better their lives when they're sitting around the house late at night before going to sleep and getting up for work/school the next day? That's all I'm trying to understand here. Personally I work a full time job and have learned a new skilled trade from this job and am working my *** off to hopefully make it a career. Once I come home each night, my work is done. Time to relax and do the things I enjoy when I have my free time.
And by the way since you brought up weight loss. I lost 50 pounds 2 years ago while still playing video games for 2-3 hours every single night.Last edited by z Revis; 12-31-2012, 02:47 PM.Indianapolis Colts
