Hey Guys. Magic here.
Something I've always been curious about. Are you expected to tip at a restaurant when its a take out order?
I'm inclined to say no, as no one is actually waiting on me. And I dont see the difference between that and ordering food from McDonald's or something where you're not expected to tip.
But I feel guilty if I dont, so I do leave a little something because the receipt always has that bold TIP area glaring at you. That and the fact that my "peer group" are not considered to be good tippers. Thus I do not want to perpetuate that line of thinking. Lol
Figured I'd ask you all, as there seems to be plenty of tipping experts amongst us.
That is all. Magic out.Comment

Re: Off Topic 2013
I typically don't. Cooks are paid on a different pay-scale than waiters/delivery people so if I go pick up Chinese food or my pizza I don't tip.

Re: Off Topic 2013
Yeah you did lob that one out there.
On the tipping on takeout, I don't see why you should tip. Like you said at that point it's no different then going to McDonalds. I got take out at a chinese buffet a couple weeks back and saw that tip line on the receipt and thought to myself for a second and left it blank. They didn't do anything but cook the food and I'm paying for that already.Battle.net: xXKING08Xx

That's a good question that I get caught up in as well (tipping take out). At the Chinese place I go, we've been going there for years and they are the nicest folks and hard-working. So I like to tip a few dollars for their efforts.
But basically anywhere else...no.GO 'HAWKS!

When Sandy hit the one pizza place that was open was packed as hell because no one else had power and wanted hot food and no other food places were open, so I tipped like $10 on a $10 orderEagles | Phillies | Sixers | Flyers

True Life: I'm addicted to tip jars. Just a buck and change usually, unless it's a place I really love. There's a few where I'll throw in a 5 or something because I know I'm getting great service.
As for writing in tips for takeout sometimes I do sometimes I don't. That's the reason I'm getting takeout over delivery: always more fresh and I don't have to tip like $5 on top of the order and delivery fee. I don't think people have an issue with no tip on takeout unless it's a big *** order.
A few bucks written in on the tip line ain't gonna kill me, and I'm pretty broke. That's how I see it. It's worth making someone's day.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

So what's the tipping etiquette in places that where you order from the counter? (not fast food places).
Only tip if they bring the food out to you or what?
