Re: Off Topic 2013
The NBA is the one league where lack of parity doesn't bother me all that much. I'd rather see Heat/Spurs instead of Pacers/Grizzles play in the finals.
Professional basketball needs its biggest stars in the biggest games to really keep me interested. Whereas I can watch a day's worth of MLB, NHL, or NFL playoff games regardless of who's playing.Last edited by areobee401; 06-04-2013, 11:06 AM.Comment

Re: Off Topic 2013
My biggest hang-up with the NBA is how laser focused they are on promoting a handful of players, but fail to really promote teams as a whole much less project players in markets that would definitely benefit from the exposure.
I would have loved to see the Spurs/Grizzlies play against the Pacers because Stern wouldn't know how to market the series since it wouldn't include Kevin Durant or LeBron James. And while Duncan is a GOAT type of player he's not that big of a celebrity.

EIGHT!
Boston, LA, Detroit, Chicago, Houston, San Antonio, Miami, Dallas.
In that same 30 year span, MLB has managed 19 different World Series champions, the NHL has managed 14 different Stanley Cup champions, and the NFL has had 15 different Super Bowl champions.
So you can watch the other leagues no problem, despite a revolving door of contenders, but you can only watch the NBA as long as the same set of teams are winning?Hey, maybe you'd find out Marc Gasol and Roy Hibbert are stars if they actually got there instead of seeing Duncan, James, Wade, Durant, etc... shoved down our throats.

Never going to get new stars if you have the same rehash year after year. You know how many different NBA teams have won a championship since 1984? We're talking 30 years of championships here, including this year since Miami and San Antonio are another rehash of the last decade or so. 8.

I'm checking out if my Celtics aren't playing or the biggest stars in the league aren't involved. Not saying I won't tune in for the 4th quarter but won't be investing an entire 3 hours of my night to watch a whole game.
Oh, and I know who Marc Gasol and Roy Hibbert are. Just don't need to see them matched up against in other in the NBA Finals. Not my idea of must see TV. I simply don't care for the NBA enough.Last edited by areobee401; 06-04-2013, 11:20 AM.Comment

They are more common in other sports, IMO-although still rare.EXPERIENCE MAYHEM FOOTBALLComment

Yes, because the postseason product is better in the other 3 professional leagues. There's not much else there to pull me into watching NBA playoff games without the top stars.

But for an absolute physical and ugly style of play, I think I would've thoroughly enjoyed that one. Both teams averaging 70 - 80 pts a game! The match ups would've been great to see.EXPERIENCE MAYHEM FOOTBALLComment

Hibbert and Gasol are All-stars, not superstars like James, Wade, and Durant. You can't polish a turd. The Association can't create superstars IMO. That's why these superstars in the league now are @ a premium, they are rare to find. Off the top of my head, there are probably 8 of these guys in the Association active.

Re: Off Topic 2013
Well, obviously nobody is wanting to promote the Bobcats or Kings, but the Pacers, Grizzlies, Bulls, and other teams deserve more spotlight and promotion on sports networks than the 24/7 LeBron James Headline Machine or focusing on the Lakers implosion (which is kind of interesting to watch unfold, but not at the expense losing attention of the successes of other teams).

I think they will try with Paul George's "success" from these playoffs. The Bulls will get more with Rose.
I disagree with you on the Grizz though. They are a very good team, and capable. However, who on that team is marketable? Everyone loves shiny and new ferraris and porsches (sp?). Not everyone is wanting to see a brand new dump truck.EXPERIENCE MAYHEM FOOTBALLComment

ESPN is LBJ central. I'll give you that, but he has earned that spot also. He's a top 5 name among all sports now.

Re: Off Topic 2013
But it doesn't.
That's what the NHL, NFL, and MLB are for. For the most part, they can use their teams for promotion.
A great team in the NBA is just that... a great team.
But a great player transcends even a decent team, even if they were moderately successful.EXPERIENCE MAYHEM FOOTBALLComment
