It's amazing what an education does for some people, but what a waste it can be for someone else. I will say that I'm wishing I had more education right now. If I did, I could slide in to the Navy as an E2 and maybe an E3.

The cost to go to Auburn for 12 credit hours is estimated to be around $26,548 per information at auburn.edu.

If you join the Navy as the lowest enlisted you could possibly be at E-1, it will take you at the very most 1 year to go from E1 to E3 and most likely will see E3 around your 9th month.

Now the difference between going into the miltary as a E1 and an E3 is only $270ish a month. So if you feel it would benefit you to spend around $53,000 dollars estimated to advance your rank to where you would only be losing out on around $3240 in pay ( estimated difference between E1-E3 pay for a 12 month period ) then Im not sure what to tell you heh.

Of course articles are going to state college is still worthwhile. Its a cycle of money being thrown down the drain and pretty much everyone except the students benefit. I could post an article stating that Bill Gates and the Yahoo billionaires also dropped out of college and never got a degree to support you dont need college to be successful, but then thats cherry picking...just like that article.

Well nobody is paying that much for 12 credit hours with in state tuition,etc. I paid $3300(maybe less) in tuition for 16 credit hours at FSU this current semester and that's for 4000 level classes.

I'll be in debt by about $25k once I graduate and for a job that starts out for $35-40k i'll accept that as getting a standard 40 hour a week retail job on a HS degree would not get anywhere close to that.

Also I cringe anytime someone brings up "Oh look at all these millionaires who didn't get go to college". Well look at all those who aren't doing so well who didn't go to college either so it works both ways, you can be successful without education but it makes everything a whole lot easier.

Man, you're talking about a college with a really expensive tuition. I know someone who just went in as an E-2 with all of their education coming from a local community college where a semester of classes (only 4 classes/week) only cost me $1600.00.

It was just a thought. I wasn't talking about achieving a Bachelor's degree from one of the state's most expensive colleges

I clean offices to pay for college.

What I'm saying is that, statistically, you're better off going to school. Even simple bachelor's degree recipients make more money and have a much lower rate of unemployment than those with a high school diploma only.

What job is this that you are guarenteed to get as soon as you graduate? Since everyone is pointing out articles, Forbes says that 60% of college graduates dont find jobs in their job field either and have to settle for much less. I dont think anyone goes to college with the mindset that they wont find work in their field, but thats the reality of the situation. Im curious as to this career field you are so confident in that will pay well as soon as you graduate and are able to get a job right away.

We work right beside UCF and the number of graduates flooding the work force is astronomical, and most of them are right back at fast food / retail / hospitality within a few months of graduation, only now with $20-40k in debt added to their problem.

The price I quoted was only for 2 semesters, not 8. I only used the information given from Auburn.edu.

Youll be an E2 before you are out of training. E1-E4 flys by, its the jump to E5 and beyond where it starts to slow down.

Don't even worry about it Chase.

My buddy in the Navy was working towards E-6 at the end of his 6 year contract. He went in as an E-1. You'll learn realllllllllllly quick that the military is all based on politicking. Be glad you aren't going USMC infantry, where you can be a model Marine and get shat upon repeatedly. I had the score to pick up E-4 for over a year, and didn't because "slots were full, we'd have to xfer you, <insert other untrue BS here>." Got out after just 4 years as an E-3. Lance Criminals all the way.

All people take difference paths in life. School isn't for everyone but no way should anyone discourage someone from wanting to further their education.

No matter the path you choose you're gonna have to work hard. It's rough out here in the real world.

Elementary Education

Friend of mine here has the same degree and is a host at a local restaurant. She graduated with a 4.0 gpa and only is able to get substitute teaching gigs at the local elementary / junior highs. Maybe gets a total of 4 days a month teaching, and the rest is spent walking people to tables. Education cutbacks are happening almost on a yearly basis and schools are having to cut back on staff almost every year as well.

I hope it works out for you the way you are planning it to though. Education is a very tough career field these days.
