Re: News that make you say WTF?
Child Protective Services is in the hot seat again — this time in Florida, where officials placed two brothers into foster care and then in the care of a relative after one, 11, was found playing basketball alone in his own yard.
The way the latest incident went down, in April, was like this, according to the mom’s story (which has since been verified through court documents by Skenazy): The mom and dad, Cindy and Fred, were on their way home from running errands but were delayed by rain and traffic. Meanwhile, their 11-year-old son had beaten them home and didn’t have a house key, so he amused himself by shooting some hoops while he waited, for about 90 minutes.
That’s when an unknown neighbor, apparently not okay with the situation, called the cops, who in turn looped in CPS. So when Cindy and Fred arrived home they were arrested for child neglect — then fingerprinted, strip searched, and held in jail overnight. Their kids, meanwhile, including their 4-year-old boy, were removed from the home and from their parents’ custody for one month. But Cindy, who had been a school-system employee at the time, reached out to Skenazy just over a month into the ordeal, being sure to note that they do not consider themselves “free-range” parents.
The world has gone crazy and extremely soft. Your kids can't even play in your own yard now ALONE ? SMHComment

CPS is too stupid to do any good, they need to be completely changed as they seem to let the terrible parents off and go after the good ones.Comment

No - they do their job (which is a needed service, btw) about 99% of the time, but all you hear about is this.Comment

Re: News that make you say WTF?
I'm not saying get rid of it completely, but any organization that is supposed to protect kids should be able to easily see the signs of a bad home and parents. The kids shouldn't have been taken away for 1 month for this. There is probably too much red tape that gets in the way of good parents and causes kids to be separated and allows bad parents to get their kids back.Comment

Yeah, it's not like my job where if I screw up it's an easy fix. Their screw ups have bad consequences.Comment

My issue with that story: you only hear one side. No way could I formulate an opinion hearing one side of story.
That's a huge gear grinder for me

My wife used to work for CPS and when you have over double the amount of cases you *should* have you're bound to make mistakes in paperwork or something....they're people, not superman.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: News that make you say WTF?
Yeah, not sure how you can form such a harsh condemnation of CPS based on this story, if anything I am willing to give benefit of the doubt because a neighbor thought enough to call CPS to begin with. Really nothing wrong with a kid playing ball in his front yard, but that doesn't mean he's not there alone locked out of the house for every day, sometimes for hours. Maybe, maybe not, who knows.
I would like to point out something from the story though, it was said the kid was playing basketball for 90 minutes because the parents were delayed by rain and traffic. If it's raining hard enough to delay you driving, probably going to be hard playing ball.Comment

Re: News that make you say WTF?
Not really. It could have been raining where the parents were at but not raining where the kid lives. For example where I live. Some times it can be raining hard in the valley, but not even raining where I live, 3 miles away. Or like yesterday, it was raining just over the border in New York all day. Not a drop of rain in Vermont just 10 minutes away.Comment
