On the flip side of that, seems like the Beyond Meat burger has been growing in popularity. Possibly billion dollar business. Instead of cheap gimmicks, why don't those burger chains invest in stuff like that?

Religious and/or health reasons are why people prefer food like that, and it's cheaper to make and store. I've seen some chains advertise it and have done real well. I've even seen grocery stores with shelves completely wiped out because so many people wanted to just make their own at home.
I'm interested to try that burger....it tries to get the "bleeding" aspects that keep a burger not dry or like every other "veggie" burger patty that's kinda nasty. Supposedly this isn't bad.

The plant based veggie ones aren't bad. If anything, just adding more ketchup or other sauce to anything veggie basically covers up the fact that there's no meat juices in them.

Don't know if it's plant based, but there's meatless chicken ones as well. Those ones taste the best, are cheaper than meat ones (if you make it yourself), and don't have the type of risks like salmonella(which there was a big recall from breaded chicken products just 2 months ago, and seems to happen every few months on various items).

I've just never had a veggie burger that isn't something you do more than tolerate, and it definitely does not mimic being a burger at all. These sound different somehow, I dunno. I haven't had one of the ones that more try to be meat vs. veggie patty though, cause those are hard to find or expensive.

I like morningstar farm tomato & basil pizza burger patties, add some mozz, marinara, and parm and it's not bad at all

agree about price though, that's the annoying thing about a low budget shopper trying to be healthy, everything healthy is more expensive, I wish there was a government food card that rewarded people for buying healthy foods, but that's a pipe dream

Never saw price, but now it shows even more why people opt for fast food over healthy options.

Those beyond meat burgers sell in groceries for $8 a pack. Only 2 in a pack.

Meanwhile at a fast food place, there's usually 2 for $5 combos on regular meat burgers, obviously with vegetables and bread. For $8, you can buy burgers and fries for 2 people. Who needs healthy options lol.

That's the thing. Fast food is cheap, delicious, and convenient. Busy people don't have to worry about cooking, and low income people don't have to worry about spending.

Re: News that make you say WTF?

Speaking of this food thing, several of you guys have probably seen this idea before, which in theory makes sense:

Well, I have one for dining out that seems to make some sense.

                Choose two among:

                - Cheap
                - Healthy
                - Tasty

The point being, of course, that "you can't have all three." And I'm not asking you to actually choose two lol, that should probably vary per meal anyway. Regardless, it's really hard to find all three. You can make all three yourself, but not necessarily when placing an order at a restaurant (this includes fast food).

I think I'd actually go cheap & healthy since I've been struggling with this for awhile and have only come up with eggs or ground turkey as my best options

I'd go cheap and healthy and hope I just adjust/learn to like the taste, or depending what it is, find a way to make it taste better on my own.

Last Friday I tried the Carl's Jr. Beyond Meat burger...it was "Beyond" day and the beyond patties were free at a lot of places. It was ok, more just masked by all the toppings, but edible at least. I'd never seek it out over meat though, and it's at least 2 bucks more just for that patty.

I'm Catholic, so we don't eat meat on Friday (you're supposed to do that or abstain from something else)...so other options are always welcome, but it'd be kinda expensive. I'm still interested in BK's Impossible burger though, that's supposedly better I think.

Re: News that make you say WTF?

Another one of those stories which refutes previous stories about what people should be doing.

Remember the 10,000 steps a day stuff? The one everyone is like "do 10,000 steps, it's recommended for good health.". Turns out theres 0 scientific data backing up that being the recommended daily goal.

Scientific research seems to suggest 6000-8000 could be the number closer to that mark.

Either way, it's another one of those stories where facts change years later.

Just like with foods. One day a certain food is good for you. Years later there'll be reports about how you should be cutting down on it because it's not as good as you think.

I dont follow or listen to those types of things. I just eat/drink what I want. Sometimes its healthy, other times it isn't. I dont track these things, but according to me I'm fine and that's all I care about.

I know healthy people who have health issues. I know others who dont believe in doctors, and are much healthier than average person of that age.

What is good and bad for your health stories are money based 99% of the time. That 10K steps thing made the fitbit and smart watch business boom. It is the same way how they keep flip flopping on the color of wine is healthy for you. One year they will say white, then the next they will say oh no, it is red, then the following year go back to white. On the news a few days ago they were talking about there is a pretty big investigation going on with hospitals and doctors. They found out a good number of doctors are being paid millions of dollars to recommend people to specialists, therapy clinics and just plain subscription drugs that they don't even need.

Investigation? Wasn't that known already? Doctors giving you stuff you probably don't need, but take it anyways so they get money. Like how they make people come back at a later date to get test results or something. Just an excuse for an extra 5-10 min visit where they get paid for it.

Or if they recommend you to a specialist. I'm sure most times it's someone they know personally. Why wouldn't you be helping out a friend draw up business?

I don't eat fast foods or anything, but I also don't eat whole grain, gluten free type of food. People today are so worried about eating regular bread or rice, it has to be whole grain. I'm sure there'll be a day in future that they don't care again.

Probably a different thing, but I know people who never wanted to drink tap water (it's been proven nothing's wrong with it). They bought a water filter and everything. A few years later, they just went back to tap water, finding no difference. I'm sure "experts" will change "facts" all the time.

Billions of people over history have lived into their 70s and beyond (more so in recent decades because of medicines), but I'm sure they never worried about gluten free stuff or health conscious stuff.
