Because it actually teaches you how and why math works. While there isn't anything inherently wrong with the old fashioned way, it was basically just memorization. Read this (all of it) and then get back to me:

I couldn't care less if a kid can solve multi step math problems in his/her head or on some scrap sheet of paper because when is that same kid ever gong to be in a position to have to do that and a calculator (phone) not be in right at their pocket?

Times and life have continued to progress and it's a damn shame that education refuses to do so.

From my understanding (which is admittedly limited as I teach college courses, not high school) but Common Core is designed to teach critical thinking rather than memorization. Regarding math, it teaches what makes up numbers, rather than just knowing 30-15 is 15. It's designed to teach a student to analyze a problem from more than one angle. Now, whether it is successful with that, I can't say as I don't have experience with it first-hand.

One issue with it is not all teachers even understand how it works. This can cause confusion and frustration for the teacher, which undoubtedly makes them a less effective teacher. Unfortunately, the American education system is designed by people who don't necessarily work in education. Pedagogy is designed by "suits" and given to teachers, rather than being designed by teachers who really understand what works and what doesn't in a classroom. So while things are great in theory, they're not always great in execution.

Yea, I do like the critical thinking aspect of it but I do think it could be pushed back a little later since it's much more of an excercise of the mind then a math problem.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe it starts in the 2nd or 3rd grade.

Same. I want to say second to get them prepared for the 3rd grade test.

Problem is, there's a good portion of kids already behind at that point and there isn't always room for catch up in districts that don't provide alternative support. So you're asking kids to utilize tools that they don't currently have in their toolbox. That kid gets bumped up or streamlined through until they see this test for the "last" time in high school and are pretty much denied a diploma because they started behind the 8ball to begin with 9 years ago.

As someone with a master's in applied math, I really want to leave my input on common core, but I'll just say this: everyone learns differently. I don't agree that common core some how explains the how and why of math better. No one really learns the "how" and "why" of math in elementary school; they learn basic math skills. Math isn't like English where you can learn about sentence structure pretty early on and that's the extent of grammar... even as difficult as English can get. Math doesn't end at addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

The traditional way worked fine for me and many others. Maybe common core allows someone who wouldn't understand the traditional way to understand math. But at the end of the day, just like with any system someone uses to teach, you'll get those that will learn easily and those that will struggle.

Speaking of school...related but a different topic.

My neice is in 1st grade this year; when she started, her reading/comprehension scores were of a 2nd grader but now they are near the bottom of her class and the teacher wants to hold her back.

Why?

Because the school is emphasizing teaching what "nonsense" words are, words that really aren't words...like asdjflskjf or fjcio or cicjoij (you get the drift). Tell me this ain't the dumbest thing to teach a kid. Make them remember words that aren't words versus learning actual words. The poor thing gets so confused now and is substantially hesitant when reading.

I was failing at math because of multiplication tables, and had to go to math therapy, my brain just doesn't memorize like that.

I could not wrap my head around geometry. Tried in high school and college, three different teachers, three different tutors...I cannot be taught geometry. I'm a smart guy, but my brain just doesn't do proofs.

I guess we're a bit off-topic.

My Uncommon Opinion for today: I don't like whole milk. It's like drinking cream.

I don't like skim milk, it's like mostly water with a little milk in it.

Uncommon Opinions

I "quit" math at Geometry. I was in advanced math classes and when I hit that, I gave up. I was burned out on school in general by HS and did the minimum to graduate. I could get by in English, History, etc but when I didn't show up to Geometry and later Algebra II, I couldn't. I took some bogus Stat class senior year to get my full credits for math.

Proofs were junk. When I had to retake geometry in an on-grade level class, we didn't even cover them. lol

This was an actual interaction I had with a customer while cashing at a large retail chain

I scanned all her items and then she hands me more coupons than items she bought. I know right away it was not gonna go well

First coupon "$1 off 2 boxes of Oreos"

Me: Miss you bought 1 box of Kebler Elf cookies
Her: yeah but they are both nabisco so it's fine
Me: no I can't accept this
Her: fine take this one

"$1 off 2 boxes of Chips Ahoy"

Me: Miss you still didn't buy this
Her:It's still Nabisco
Me: I still can't take it

Next coupon "$1 off four boxes of instant mash potatoes"

Me: Okay miss you bought 0 boxes of mash potatoes
Her: But the 2 boxes of cake mix is by the same company

This continued with granola bars being the same as the frosting and finally knowing that she was gonna get me to call the manager who will then say just take the coupons I scanned 2 $1 coupons and said "fine there you go have a nice day".

I hate coupons so much because even if it's against the policy our managers will just say accept it to avoid the guest getting angry and filing a complaint.

I've had someone give me a $8.99 off X item. The item was $9 and the guest made me call a manager who said accept it when it was 100% fake
