There is nothing wrong with common core math and the only reason parents don't like it is because they don't understand how it works.

Re: Uncommon Opinions
How would you make sure each student is getting taught correctly and each teacher is doing a good job? I agree it's not a great system but I don't know what would be better.MLB: Texas Rangers

Re: Uncommon Opinions
Teachers get evaluated in other ways as well but that varies from state to state. We have something called otes which the standardized test scores factor into. As of right now, there is no clear cut way to check for what you're asking. Many kids come into school with little to no support at home and is pretty much guaranteed to be a cycle kid. That shouldn't fall on the teacher. Every school isn't East Side High.

Yeah I agree parents play a big role and that's a big problem today but I feel like standardized testing is a necessary evil to make sure kids have a minimum knowledge for each grade or whenever they take the tests.
In Texas you took the test 3 or 4 times throughout your time from K-12. If you failed you couldn't advanced to the next grade but they had some sort of summer school thing that if you did that then you could advance to the next grade. Teachers had a much bigger say if you passed or not.
I know teachers didn't like standardized testing because you had to teach to the test instead of other things and I completely understand that frustration but like I said earlier each student should have a minimum amount of knowledge and this is really the best way to make sure it's across the board.
It's unfortunate because not all school districts were as good as the one I grew up in and I'm not sure how to fix the problem. You can't make parents help their children.MLB: Texas Rangers

I'm glad I'm not a teacher or in education because I can imagine how much of a burden this change would be, especially when they didn't learn this way growing up.
I think a lot of hostility towards it is just because it's different (along with who it came from) but I can't judge either way. I've worked with it with my 8 and 15 year old nieces and it's definitely much different than the way I learned. If it works than it works, but I can't help but feel that it's just a band aid to much larger issues with the educational system in this country.[NYK|DAL|VT]
