Is the book worth it to a complete novice? Or should you get some trial runs on the grill under your belt first?

When you guys get a new grill, is there a special item that you grill first to "break it in?"

                Yes! AIR!

Seriously! You should grill some charcoal and coat the inside of your grill with that soot.
It will help protect the inside of the grill and cure it to get rid of any dirt, paint or lacquer residue.

Most grills will have tips on how to cure them.
Also spraying them down with Pam or oil is a good idea too.

                Curing a Grill

DO NOT - I repeat - DO NOT use lighter fluid when curing your grill!
It will embed that flavor into your grill.

                Blech!

After I cure my grills, which I do because we get cheap throwaway grills due to space/size/placement issues at our apartment, the first thing I always cook is the best steak I can find from the ranches around here.

Back in Wisconsin, I'd do deer steak because I had a constant supply of it - not so much out here in CA, so I stick to cow out here.

You guys have a good way of cleaning a grill?

My dad managed to take the grill and started burning documents inside that he didn't need anymore.

Now it has this funky smell inside

I'm planning on buying a new grill, but until then I wanted to see if there was anything I can do to salvage it?

I was going to take a pressure washer and clean it out that way as best as possible, then cure the grill all over again.

Try cleaning it with grill cleaner. I think Easy Off makes some, then smoke some nice wood chunks in it for a few hours.
Once thats done, clean it with some vegetable oil.
Water is never a good thing to use on metal.

Yeah I thought that too, but I figured there was no way to get out the smell and soot of the paper documents that were burning in there. I figured a quick wash, then firing up the grill would eliminate any problems from using water. But I don't know much :P

With the Easy Off, do you just leave it in the grill without wiping it or hosing it off?

It depends on what kind you buy. Some are just wipe off.
Just check some of the products out and read the instructions on what they say. You should always clean your grill when its hot and never use water. Always use oil or some type of oil based grill cleaner. Oil will help seal it and it wont rust.

Someone got me some ArmorAll (I think) grill wipes and they were great for wiping down the outside, handles, etc. I didn't want to use it on the grates and inside (cause it wasn't bad), but I bet those are pretty good overall. They had plastic "nubs" that helped scrub off harder stuff.

Lol no, they were grill wipes, just forget the exact brand I guess. Plus I could see Armor All cleaning brand branching out to grills, not that crazy of a thought.

Either way, they were specifically for grills (had a grill on the bag and everything), but weren't weber ones.
