Ultimately, I want a smoker too, but the priority this year is simply a bigger grill than my Weber kettle. I wouldn't mind a stand alone smoker, but we honestly have very meat storage here so I feel like the firebox would be adequate unless I can find something priced reasonably.

Another idea would be to turn my kettle into a smoker, but I have no idea how I would accomplish that.

    What are your ideas, guys?

Do any of you guys have a CharGriller?

I noticed last night there's a fair bit of smoke leaking out from the side of the lid (which really wouldn't be too bad if it was leaking on the same side as the stove-pipe) and was curious what I could do to stop it up.

I've seen people "mod" it by lining it with aluminum foil and others have done more extensive work including using dryer-tubing to extend the stove-pipe down further into the grill. Just curious what you guys typically do to stop up leaking.

No need, since it's fairly new, it doesn't have the "gunk" of grease from grilling throughout the years that an older grill has that helps seal those leaks. Grill some more and it should fix itself.

Thanks. It worked well last night, but I wasn't sure how it would affect smoking.

I'm still a rookie compared to some of the users here in this thread, so I may be wrong but this is what I read when I made my smoker.

+1 I've been grilling with a CharGriller for about 5 years now and this was my experience.

My father in law got me my grill as a house warming gift with what seems like a lifetime supply of mesquite chips. So I haven't had anything other than mesquite for a very long time!

Depends on the meat. I usually stick with this rule of thumb but sometimes mix the woods.

Mesquite, Hickory, Oak for beef and pork
Apple or Cherry for Poultry and Fish (alder for fish as well).

We had this conversation about 800 posts ago.
I had posted a table whose website has since been deleted.

I like this site you posted FT. Much better and in depth than what I had found.
