Re: Explosions at the Boston Marathon

Thoughts and prayers to the people in Boston. As a marathon runner, this really hits home.

I finished the Chicago marathon last year at 4:09:42 which is seconds before the explosion in Boston. Even worse, I know my family would have been in those stands.

Unbelievable that something like this could happen at an event like the Boston Marathon. It is the runners dream, our "SuperBowl" to attend an event like this.

So the world is not burning and becoming "a much worse place", instead that is just all that is shown now sadly.
Agreed. The media is in the business of getting viewers. Catastrophe gets viewers.

The way those people immediately went to help those they didn't know, many without formal training, during such an unpredictable circumstance shows their true heroism and makes me proud to be an American.

I'm going to say this and just step out.

There are some incredibly (for lack of a better term) clueless statements in this thread.
If you think things are OVERBLOWN because of the media.....you wouldn't leave your house in the morning(if you lived in a major city anyway) if you knew of the immense amount of things you DON'T hear about.

            This was no amateur event.
The only thing that surprises me is it didn't happen at the starting line.

Apparently the cell phone thing from AP was wrong. Not shocked. Just heavy traffic, as to be expected.

I'm not saying that bad, terrible things don't happen daily or that this is necessarily overblown at the moment, but rather simply that when things like this do happen, they are certainly sensationalized by media. This was an absolute travesty, but are the (inevitable) daily, almost even hourly reports we will surely see about this really a hundred percent necessary? An awful thing occurred today. The media should be covering it, for sure. But it is inevitable that the media will ride this pony until it passes out from exhaustion.

Like I said, a terrible thing occurred today. Prayers go out to everyone who was involved or may know someone involved. Grieving for the victims right now is appropriate. But, the media firestorm that is coming is not. In fact, according to research we have been discussing recently in one of my classes, it is actually detrimental. In tragic deaths, the grieving of those survivors is actually made much tougher by the media and it will only become harder. Ultimately, I think that, especially with these kinds of things, the media needs to report it, of course. People need to know. But continuing on with the media circus that is more than likely on the horizon in the upcoming days is irresponsible of the media.

So, I mean no disrespect, and I tried to make this sound as respectful as possible. I understand what you are saying, I just happen to disagree.

                                POTUS speaking now.

Implies that someone was behind it, but did not use the "T" word. Kind of surprised by that.
