    What happened to good music?

This has been something that has been going through my mind the last few days.

It seems ever since the mid 90's, music has been slowly going downhill to what we have today. Boring, generic mainstream Pop and Rap dominate the airwaves now a days.

I was born in 1992 and grew up listening to 80's music due to my parents. Bands and Artists like Rush, U2, The Police, Billy Idol, Led Zeppelin, A-Ha, Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Queen, etc. I could go on and on. IMO this was the golden age of music. Every song had a meaning and story behind the lyrics. Whenever you listened to these songs you felt some emotional connection to the song that current songs today don't have. The music created by these artists/ bands is music I can listen to over and over again for hours on end without ever getting tired of it. Like "Take on Me" by A-Ha, I've been listening to that song for a few days now, can't get enough. Or "Rebel Yell" by Billy Idol. Music today is a different story.

Everything sounds so bland and horrible. I listen to it once on the radio and I just can't listen to it again. The lyrics have no meaning and it feels like they weren't put together with too much thought. Auto tune dominates every song now and that makes every song sound just that more similar to the next. There are still many amazing bands out there don't get me wrong, but do you ever hear them on popular radio stations today that play the Justin Bieber's, Carly Ray Jepsen's, One Direction's, etc? I'd say no. It's all mainstream now.

What do you guys think? Agree or disagree? Like I said, this has been something that has been on my mind for a few days now. I was curious what everyone else thought regarding the topic.

Internet killed it, internet kills everything it touches.
The internet is like a zombie, once it affects it, it's infected forever.
Sure, music is still made, but it no longer has a soul.

Good music still exists, you just aren't as likely to find it by tuning in to local radio stations like you could years ago.

I'm sure there were people saying the same thing about a lot of the 70s and 80s bands you mentioned in your post, back in that time period.

My grandmother can tell me about when her parents thought Elvis was vulgar and didn't approve of him at all.

Times changes, people change, interests change, and music changes.

Just hold on to the music you do like from that time period.

Most of the music I listen to won't be found anywhere near the FM dial.

There is so much good music being made. You just need to look in the right places.

Technology has changed. Expecting the radio to still be the best source to find new music is flawed.

Good music still exists, even in the mainstream.

For example, "The Heist" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis is one of the better hip-hop albums I've listened to recently, particularly with regard to subject matter compared to more traditionally popular artists in the genre.

Similarly, I think the new self-titled album by Paramore is a pretty well-put-together modern pop-punk album which draws influences from all over the subgenre and executes them all very well.

Yeah there is good music. But mass consumption music is your problem. And to be fair, this is all subjective anyway.

You also have to consider that sooner or later, musicians run out of **** to do.

Well, yeah. That's not the point of the meme, though.

For another perspective on on mass-produced pop music (notably One Direction, mentioned in the topic post) I turn to the YouTube commentary series "A Dose Of Buckley" (NSFW):

I hate every time this discussion comes up. Not only is it tired beyond belief, but it's not addressed properly. No **** there's always being good music made. That's not the issue at hand.

The commentary is based on what's popular. Sure there were some terrible songs in the past that were incredibly popular, but there were quite a few enjoyable ones (legitimately, guilty pleasure, whatever) as well.

This era of popular music is straight up awful. I can't remember the last time I heard a popular song that was made within the last 5 years and said "you know, this isn't that bad." At the very least, the popular songs in the past sounded different. Seems like every popular song I hear now sounds exactly the same, whether it's dance, hip-hop, or "rock", and that's annoying. I have to ask my friends who sings what and I'm blown away when they actually know. You know how many times I thought a song was a, I dunno, Lady Gaga song that turned out to be someone else's?
