Re: What happened to good music?

A while back there was a Cracked article titled "7 Scientific Reasons You'll Turn Out Just Like Your Parents" and the first reason was "Your Brain Will Stop Getting Pleasure from New Music" which kind of supports what a lot of guys are saying...

(I've trimmed it down to the science-y stuff. Full article is at http://www.cracked.com/article_19722...r-parents.html)

As you get older, your brain becomes more and more unable to handle dopamine, which, as we've pointed out before, is a big factor in making us feel "the chills" when a new exciting piece of music comes on.

Because nothing you hear will have that same effect on you as the fresh exciting sounds of your youth, it will become harder and harder to get fired up about new music. Your musical taste will therefore stagnate, regardless of how on top of the trends you were at 17. If you want to know what new music will sound like when you're 50, go spend an hour watching TV shows intended for toddlers. See how long you can tolerate it.
So, you'll get older and settle down and, inevitably, the ubiquitous Rumours album by Fleetwood Mac will mysteriously appear in your collection, like a Gideon Bible in a hotel. Just accept it.

    And get off our lawn.

Re: What happened to good music?

I listen to music that many would consider coming from some of the best artists/bands of their time, or possibly all-time. I also listen to a lot of music that many don't like or consider complete garbage. It's all subjective, so it really ends up being a conversation that just goes in circles.

Every era of music has "good" and "bad" music and it probably largely depends on who you talk to. You could put a lot of stock into what music critics say, but their opinion should have no bearing on whether you actually enjoy a song or not. Same with a movie.

Even if you were to try and make the point that a certain song has lasting impact as "good" by any number of people, it's still going to depend on who you talk to.

Well, I just listened all the way through Rob Zombie's new album. I really like it. Might be up there with Astrocreep 2000 and Hellbilly Deluxe.

I guess I got out of the 'kids pop music' stage pretty quickly and jumped right into that 50 year old stage by the time I was 14. There was already a Rumours album in the record collection I got from my parents.

Oh, and don't forget KC and the Sunshine Band. They existed, no matter how much Sun Life wants to remind us.

Hey. They had some of the deepest lyrics ever. No one else would have ever thought to make an entire song out of the phrase "Shake your booty."

Guilty pleasure of mine in the 70's.

Disco, but, considered passable for me. Liked the horn section.

For every disco group, there were great folk singers like someone else said earlier.

Harry Chapin is one of my favorites from that era. Cats in the Cradle, but he had some great songs with great lyrics, Taxi, All My Life's a Circle, etc....

One of my favorite songs from that era of folk singers was Don McCleans American Pie. Great song, great lyrics paying homage to other musicians before him.

This is why I love OS:

I like to think I'm pretty up-to-date on my music, but I had never even heard of Of Monsters and Men. But that video looked interesting, so I watched it. Dug the song, so I went to iTunes and previewed some more of the album. And now I'm at work listening to my new album on my iPhone.

So thanks Watson for posting that.

I have a soft spot in my heart for 70's, 80's and 90's music because that's what I grew up listening too.

However, there are still some really good bands out there with great music. Will you find them on the Top 40? Probably not, but there're definitely out there.

                      Currently my rotation looks like

                      Passion Pit
                      Phoenix
                      Of Monsters and Men
                      Animal Kingdom
                      Mumford and Sons
                      Two Door Cinema Club
                      The Killers
                      and
                      The Black Keys

I'll also mix in some Kings of Leon, Foster the People and MGMT if I'm in the mood.
                      My 2K17 Boston Celtics MyLeague

                      Alabama Crimson Tide
                      Green Bay Packers
                      Boston Celtics

                      New Orleans Pelicans

Simply, if you can't find good music, you aren't looking in the right places. Spotify, Pandora, and social music places like TurnTable can introduce you to so much.

i feel like sounds almost cycle sometime too. electronic and synth sounds are definitely making a heavy return in music of late, and i mean like alternative rock and stuff like that too. like Phoenix, M83, Portugal The Man, MGMT, Foster the People. i can get down with all that stuff. i feel like Nine Inch Nails incorporated some of that too.

My Sirius Radio wasn't working for some reason this afternoon so I had to listen to FM radio. MY GOD. It was the same 10 songs they have been playing for the past year. I think FM radio is where the problem really lies. Stations being afraid to play anything outside the top charts.

Ya, this is always a subjective matter and the comprehensive comments here are true: you can find both good and bad in all eras/decades of music. But, sorry OP, to consider the 80's the golden age.... nuh uh. I can't even consider my coveted 70's as having that title. I think that whereas the 50's was the incubator, that title belongs to the 60's.

Seeing Derek Trucks in this thread makes me feel o-l-d.

He used to play Knoxville when I was in school. He was 14 then.
