I have love for all recent eras of music from 60s on up, and there is always something good each year that comes out. Every generation has loads of crap and good stuff. Just go back to the billboards and actually listen to pop music from each generation and you'll find some duds there too. I admit 60s was great for me because I'm such a motown fan.

I figure during that time there was a lot of pain going around the country with war and equal rights movement. You can just feel the soul and pain from the singers of that era. That's stuff I enjoy when I'm chillin around the house. I enjoyed a lot of 70s soul artist too and of course the great Bob Marley is one of my faves.

Seems like a lot of Os guys are not fans of dance music but that's ok. I'm a huge fan of each era of dance since the 70s even disco. I grew up with disco and motown in my house and it's engraved in me. Love a lot electronic stuff from 90s on up too.

Plus I like dancing and I like dancing with girls so that's not gonna stop. I know a lot of people think what's on the radio is crap but there's a few out there that will get you moving. Not all songs have to have substance. Just like movies, you'll want to see an action movie every once in awhile to see things blown up and not have to be Oscar winner.

I'm not gonna judge people though who like music that I don't. We are all wired differently. It's great to have such a wide variety to choose from.

When did listening to music become a competition anyway? It irks me that people think they are better than you in some way because they like a certain type of music. Go ahead and win your imaginary prize because you like this band and I don't.

All that matters is that you find music that moves you physically, emotionally and spiritually.

I'm happy that there is music, imagine a world without it. I lost my ipod for a couple hours yesterday and thought the world was gonna end lol.

Re: What happened to good music?

It definitely is interesting to see everyone's tastes. Also interesting to see how musical tastes evolve.

For instance, growing up, my parents listened primarily to country music, so that's what I mostly liked. Up until I was around 14 or so (1994), when I started getting into 90's alternative. Mostly Soundgarden & Stone Temple Pilots. Also became a big Metallica fan starting with Load (I know, a lot of their fans hated the style they started to adopt with this album, but it was the first of theirs that I'd really listened to. I then listened to more of their old stuff, and really wound up liking the vast majority of their catalog. St. Anger being the exception - didn't care for that one).

Anyway - Now that I'm in my early 30's, I've got a pretty wide range of stuff that I like, but it's all rock. Love classic rock stuff like the Stones, Led Zeppelin, AC / DC, etc. Love 90's alternative still. Like a fair amount of 80's stuff. Also like a lot of blues, new and old, and though I don't listen to it much, I do like the old "Big Band" stuff, with Sinatra and all.

But as far as modern artists, I just haven't found many that have multiple songs that I like, the exception being the Black Keys. (Though, admittedly, I fall under the "not looking in the right places" category. When I'm in the car, it's usually on ESPN radio or the classic rock station here. When it's music I own on my phone or iTunes, it's a mix of what I mentioned above. When it's Pandora, it's my station that's been gradually tuned to a mix of classic rock and 90's alternative).

To me, Nicki Minaj exemplifies what is so bad about today's top 40 stuff. Particularly starting around the 1:05 mark of this:

      <iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/HouET3H0vAE?rel=0" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" width="560"></iframe>

They'll play that segment coming out of commercials on Mike and Mike sometimes, and it just drive me crazy. It's just noise.

But, as many have said, to each their own. I know I'm getting old and crotchety.

Look up the Top 40 for any year and you'll find the same bad ****.

I don't pay attention to stuff I don't like or know I won't like so Taylor Swift, Beiber, Minaj, etc don't bother me because I know what they are and what their purpose is and its not for me.

That actually made the current music sound decent. But then again, I'm a sucker for pretty much anything A Capella.

It's basically because everyone remembers the good music. If you go look at the charts from the 80s you'll find bad music. We just remember all the great songs.

There's always been bad music, it's just that the masses seem to "enjoy" the crappy stuff to the point that it's on top of the charts and you have to actually go digging for the good stuff.

Of course, you did mean, 'sans The Black-Eyed Peas'. Of course you did.

I think we need a separate "Ultimate Bad Mainstream Music" thread, which must include the actual song!

As much as I can't stand the Black Eyed Peas, even that sounded good. But again, I'm a total choral nerd and literally anything A Capella sounds good to me as long as it's done well.

I usually read threads, but short on time right now. I'm sure someone mentioned this, but I'd suggest Spotify. Pick through the artists they have listed as related to whatever you're listening to.

Sometimes the ads can also key you into some good music. I discovered Of Monsters and Men that way. Psyched to see that they're on SNL this weekend. I also came across Emeli Sande through Spotify. I guess she's big in Europe (or at least bigger than in the US), but she's too good to not catch on here too.

I didn't find them through Spotify, but I'm loving Grace Potter & the Nocturnals right now. Heard about them a couple years ago, but going back and listening to their stuff from 5-7 years ago - awesome stuff.

                              Music is out there.
