That did the trick, thank you! It's a bitch having a bike near the ocean, rust gets on it like dust.

I was an active cyclist years back but only just putter around the area now.

Enjoy your trek to the Western Slope; God's Country
That's right; you're on the Western Slope (nice to see you back here, btw). Yeah, the trip should be a lot of fun. I'll have to check out that territory you mention, sounds interesting.

Rode my bike into work today; had to take advantage of the nice weather we're having here. It was a little chilly with the wind but I had my winter gear on so it wasn't bad. Took just under 30 minutes to go the 8 miles, which was due to me hitting just about every light on the ride. Should be really nice when I leave to go home.

A good trial run for this spring/summer when I plan on riding 2-3 times a week to work.

The guy that has put the most work into this has lived in my community for years. I taught 2 of his daughters and he did our remodeling. They have sunk a ton of time and money into this trail, so it may end up being one of those hidden gems for you.

          Re: Any cyclists/mountain bikers/commuters?

          Finally purchased a bike.

It's unlikely that I get a vehicle while I'm here in Japan and I need something to make my short walk to work easier. I'm tired of relying on other people and public transportation to get to work quick some mornings.

I also think it might be nice to take in the area on a bike. I can go places I normally wouldn't go on foot.

Just a basic mongoose mountain bike and I outfitted it with multi option lights and purchased a lock and helmet. I'm going to register it with security tomorrow.

Got in a nice 25-mile ride yesterday. The weather here in CO has been fantastic; 73 yesterday and mid-60's today.

I rode on several paved trails that connect to one another at different points. I was around downtown, so not as hilly as where I live, which was a nice change and allowed me to drop the hammer a few times and reach some nice speeds.

Commuted to work today. Ride this morning was great; 50 degrees and sunshine. On the way home, cold and windy and spitting snow/rain. The hill climb home was rough but hey, you have to suffer a little when you are cycling, right?

It's cold here today, but the forecast looks great for the weekend. I'm hoping to get a couple of rides in, including one on my mountain bike if the trails aren't too wet/muddy.

I also plan on resuming my commutes to work via bike next week. I needed to rest the legs this week after my grueling business trip.

                  Re: Any cyclists/mountain bikers/commuters?

I just bought an American Eagle road bike to replace my cheapo Mongoose.

Love this bike. It has a headlight that's source of power is generated by the front wheel spinning and it glides along on the road really well. On flat surfaces It takes very little effort now. It's an all around upgrade for me.. Well worth the 31,000 yen.

It was getting rough commuting to work and around town with my other bike.

Don't mind my friend's trendy swimshorts. We were planning on riding to the beach.

                    Nice bike, Chase!

May is the start of the National Bike Challenge. Registered yesterday and will log all of my rides through Sept. Be interesting to see how many I can ride in that time frame.

I just looked into that; good stuff there. I've said it time and again, but I'm not a great biker. However, I really like the idea of tracking my progress and providing a sense of additional meaning to what I'm doing when I workout (which is why I still use Wii Fit, ha). I wasn't aware of the National Bike Challenge or MapMyRide, so thank you for that.

Is MapMyRide a good app? Do you guys have any other recommendations on that front?

I like MMR. I have found it to be pretty accurate. I have a Garmin device (it's a few years old but still works) that also tracks miles that I attach to the handlebar.

Chase, what's it like riding in Japan? Are there a lot of bike lanes and do a lot of people commute via bike? How's the air quality where you are at?

It's pretty common for people to commute with a bicycle. A lot of Japanese people don't have a vehicle and if they do it's likely Eco friendly and fuel efficient or it may be a small scooter/moped. There aren't many bike lanes.

The biggest thing that took me some time was getting used to traffic laws and how they differ along with how people drive on the left side of the road.

I think I'm just used to seeing it now and it doesn't have an effect me.

Something neat I saw in South Korea was bicycle rental stands. You walk up to one and pay or swipe your card and then take the bike and drop it off at any other stand you see. They are all unmanned and it's just another way to provide transportation to citizens.

I use MMR and really like it. It also ties into MyFitnessPal if you want to track your exercise on there.

The only bad/unavoidable thing about it is that it will drain your battery but I usually close all my other apps except for music to keep the battery life.

Also, make sure you put "auto-pause" on. It will stop your tracking if you're stationary for more than a 5-10 secs. If you're going to be riding more than 10 miles I'd suggest changing the auto alert notification to like 2/3 miles so you're not constantly reminded via the auto voice alerts.

If I were to bike to the basketball courts and play for a few hours, would I have to turn that into two trips? One bike ride there, stop, start another ride back, then stop?
