"red" was more a reference towards the "neck" rather then politics.

I'd take Charlotte over The Triangle everyday. But the real gem of NC is the Triad.

Meh, the Triad is okay, I enjoy both Charlotte and the Triangle. There are a lot of good places to live in this state.

If I had a move somewhere else I'd head up to the north-west corner. I like visiting NC and it is pretty similar to VA, but I don't want to live down there.

Sorry for thread jacking, but what's so nice about the Triangle? I'm giong to be a HS Senior, and visited Duke this summer. The only drawback I could find about the school (Besides being 10hrs from my home and cost) was Durham did not seem like a nice area. Compared to other college areas like Charlottesville, Durham looked like complete crap.

Durham is only 1 part of the Triangle

Are the other areas that much nicer? We briefly dove through Raleigh, and it didn't seem like anything special, though I didn't get a good look at it, and Durham seemed to have a lot of bad areas.

I haven't been in the area in a long time, but I have a lot of friends in the Raleigh/Chatham/Chapel Hill areas and they really like it there. There are a lot of small towns within and close to the Triangle.

My point was really that you can't judge the Triangle as a whole because of one part. Every city/region has bad parts to it.

Yeah... You especially can't judge the Triangle by Durham. There are actually nice areas of Durham, though. The area around Research Triangle Park is decent... Some nice subdivisions, though technically it is JUST inside Durham.

Raleigh is a beautiful little city. There are always cool things going on and the city is fairly young and advanced in terms of technology and recreational opportunities.

The Morrisville/Cary/Apex area between Raleigh and Durham/Chapel Hill is nice. I live in Morrisville and it is a very pretty area, aside from the traffic.

They do coincide quite a bit in that region. I'd know haha. But I can see what you mean with the racetrack there and west of that being mostly country.

North Carolina does have some beautiful ares.

As does the rest of the coast south of there. It just all depends what you are looking for in a place to live. You are definitely picking the right time to do it though.

I made this same decision about a month ago. I'm moving to Florida next month and couldn't be more satisfied with my decision to leave Chicago.

I definitely wish you the best in your search and if you happen to move towards Orlando, I could definitely use a roommate lol

Never thought about Orlando, or Florida in general. I probably should expand my search just a little bit.

While this made me smile in the context of the thread...there is an element of truth as well. The PNW is not for everyone. If you aren't HAPPY with overcast skies for most of the year, and you don't consider rain to be 'liquid sunshine' then for your mental health, stay away.

This. Cost of living is one of the prime obstacles to me being able to move back at this time. Once my wife gets more experience with coding software, we should be able to go back, I hope.

And outside of Duke's campus it's a hole.

Even the area around the new DBAP is sketchy.
