    Re: DC Naval Yard Shooting

Video games being brought into the discussion again. I wish someone would just mention that there is absolutely NO data that supports the notion that violent video games have anything to do with real life violence.

I guess it's easier for people to blame crap on things like video games than to deal with the reality that there are some really evil people in this world.

I can't believe the government would trust someone who had "a pattern of misconduct" on a military yard.

I think there is some truth to the video game discussion. If a weak minded, and misguided person confuses reality with fiction then video games could be an outlet for them to practice their evil fantasies. Games are getting more and more realistic. So I see how it comes up, Breivek said that he played COD for training for the Norway shootings.

But, it's stupid to say that video games are the sole purpose for mass shootings. You would have to draw the line at movies, books, and any other violent entertainment. Our society as a whole is desensitized to violence. But, video games and a messed up person can't be good.

All that said, I am not at all in favor of banning video games, but I can see how a misguided person could live in that fantasy, and they could play a GTA or COD, and fantasize about that being real.

If someone seriously plays a violent video game and becomes inspired by that game and decides to turn their "evil fantasies" into reality, they were bound to do something violent anyway as far as I'm concerned.

That's such a huge cop out. I've played tons of violent games out there and never have I thought to actually do that stuff in real life. Instead I'm just trying to progress into the next level of the game....

When these things happen, it's evil. Pure unadulterated evil. Many cannot fathom such evil existing so they try to rationalize and justify. They try to scapegoat. They blame the weapon. They blame the videogames. They blame the person who stepped on his brand new shoes in 4th grade. They blame everything but evil when it's staring them right in the face.

Now word is coming out that he had a security clearance to enter the Navy Yard. Why was this guy given a security clearance given his checkered past? Absolutely ridiculous.

                  I agree.

Yes, because your not a insane person, but to a less rational person, a video game may not seem fiction to them.

That is definitely a poor word choice. Is English the first language?

I think you make some valid points, but you have to differentiate between pure unadulterated evil (the non-feeling, totally uncaring sociopaths) and those who are truly mentally ill. I know we could discuss the evil component overlap, but doubtfully, not here.

I'm not feeling how this whole thing went down. Yes, the guy has priors and mental issues. I still need an explanation of how he got an assault weapon (3 guns in total) into the building. I can understand how he got clearance but how'd he get the weapons in? They were after 3 guys and the details on what happened to the other 2 is nonexistent. I really hope I'm wrong but there seems to be a cover up.

I thought it was already established that he stole two of the weapons off people he attacked once he got in with the shotgun?
