FBI in Washington confirms that an AR-15 wasn't used, as previously reported yesterday.

    A shotgun and two pistols.

      More media ****-up's.

Seriously, I haven't watched much coverage outside of the initial hour or so. It's basically rumors. And I've resigned myself to the fact I'll never truly know because I wasn't there, unless there's some surveillance footage.

So to me it's just a tragedy that people had to lose their lives. I can't understand why this guy did this, so all I can do is feel for the family and friends of those slain.

There needs to be a punishment for such wrong information...

The media is so powerful and shapes the counry's POV on many things (especially those who don't actually research things)

I agree. They capitalize on people seeing just a headline and not fully knowing what happened or why.

You could flash a headline that some catastrophic event happened, and you'd have a ton of people talking about it even though it's completely made up.

It's actually pretty scary that they have that power and control.

Absolutely, I agree. My only point was, we are desensitized to alot of things these days, and video games are huge part of that. So to an insane person, shooting up people is probably just like a video game to them.

They need to look into why whenever a month ago, whenever he went to the police for help because he knew something was wrong, why they didn't do anything than? He told them he was hearing voices and people were following him, trying to kill him.

And they just basically brushed him away.

                        Deplorable.

Having dealt with the Navy Yard almost every day (in some form) when I was stationed in DC 2 blocks away, its really unthinkable for me. Out of all the bases in the area, this would have been the last one I would have pegged as a spot for something like this to go down. It's all ceremonial and administrative (also tiny.). Luckily all my close friends are gone from there and the couple buddies I have left there were Docs so they weren't around where it took phase.

That being said, if you're working on (any) base in some capacity... Getting arms in with you is a very easy thing to do. Anyone who has been to a base before can attest to that.

This is just a complete and utter failure on multiple levels and there isn't much I can do but offer my condolences to the families affected.

If that was the case, I don't think there was really anything the police could've done, unless they thought he would harm himself or others.

I've said it before, but the police WILL NOT do anything until you actually go out and do something like this. I know this from firsthand experience.

My family dealt with a crazy person. We told them, she is crazy something is going to happen. Weeks later, she's hanging in the garage.

The difference here is it seems he WANTED help, while the person I knew did not. She actually escaped from a hospital. Yeah... Wild.

                            Disturbing stuff.

I honestly don't know how to help the mental health problem that continues to rear its ugly head.

There is a process called "Involuntary commitment". Basically if a family member or law enforcement come into contact with a person who they believe will do harm to themselves or others they can have them committed to a mental health hospital against that persons will. The hold is for 72-hours I believe. Your encounter with the police does not warrant that process to take place, so they did no wrong. I mean if I had a bunch of people I didn't like and I went to the police saying "Hey slickdtc is crazy and something is going to happen if you guys don't step in!" in hopes of getting you committed to a mental health hospital, that doens't seem right does it?

What did you want them to do? Seriously

Is there a detailed report of the encounter between this guy and police? If he wants help he can roll right into a mental health hospital and get it. There might not been enough there for police to intervene and obtain involuntary commitment papers.

Also you need to realize that there is an anti-involuntary commitment movement as well. It's not as easy as "hey that guy is crazy let's throw him in the mental hospital".
