I have a honest question. You stated you have two dogs, so they are familar with other dogs. Why did your dog first move was to attack and bite the other dog? I believe fully you are in the right in this situation but I'm just wondering what made your dog attack it? Reason I'm asking is our dog comes in contact with other dogs at the vet, petsmart, the park, the groomer etc. So its pretty accustomed to the interaction of other dogs with out getting violent. A dogs first reaction around another dog should not be violent is my only concern from ya'll side. Plus labs are generally a nice disposition breed.Last edited by Phobia; 12-18-2013, 11:09 AM.Comment

I guess as a reaction to how the other dog approached. Our dogs are fine with other dogs at dog parks, petsmart, etc. Even prior to this when their dog had been outside our dogs would look at it bit never tug in that direction. One other time that dog came into our yard while I had them and they pulled towards it but I held them back. They didn't growl or bark at it that time. The only thing I can think of was how it came charging barking at them/us then the excitement that ensued with Zoey getting away and my wife falling to the ground.Comment

Defense mechanism in reaction to what they deemed aggressiveness towards "their family" I'm guessing. Just was wondering because a family pets first action around another dog should not be to hurt it so I was thinking you guys might want to keep tabs on that, but if there is no prior acts before this around other pets then it might of just been the situation.Comment

Dogs have a very strong pack hierarchy instinct. This is why even terribly aggressive dogs will be submissive to their master/pack leader. But still all belonging to the same pack, hence the protectiveness of his territory and owner(s).
I have a lab/border collie mix and he's as docile as they come, though a little skittish at times around large men (which makes me nervous, admittedly, that someday he may bite). Around other dogs he's goofy as heck. But when he's approached aggressively on "his turf," his posture is much more alert.
Another example: He doesn't bark at the mailman when I walk him, but does when he comes to the door.
At least, this is what I suspect the reason to be.Last edited by Heroesandvillains; 12-18-2013, 02:01 PM.Comment

Another dog charging their family? The way they acted seems like a natural reaction to me. Now if the neighbors dog would have just calmly walked up, then that would be a different story (but still not that out of the ordinary for a dogs to be overprotective, especially around new dogs). In this situation I would put the blame 100% on the other dogs owner for not having their dog either inside a fence or on a leash.
Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to try to introduce the dogs to each other since it doesn't sound like they have a fence. Just a thought. My 2K17 Boston Celtics MyLeague

If your dogs learn the other dogs then they probably wouldn't be so defensive.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Ok I don't own dogs, nor did I read past the first page, so maybe this was already answered..
But when stuff like this happens.. Do you file a police report? Kind of like a car accident. You file a report, so there is written evidence as to what exactly happened. With something like this, do you go to the police?
Or do you simply wait it out until the other party does something?Comment
