Been thinking of doing Lasik. I'm not a fan of the whole "slice the top of your eye so it can be lasered" thing though. Is that still how they do it?

Yeah they cut the flap, laser you then put the flap back down. It's quick and painless. It did seem like I was being probed by an alien though.MLB: Texas Rangers

Re: Off Topic 2014
When my father had it done it was in it's very early staged. The slice made on his eyes were done by hand by the doctor. No thanks to that but again, this was way back when they had to have the eyes done separately with weeks in between the procedure.
When I had it done, a machine just hovered over my eyes that were forced open.
Didn't feel a think or even know when the cut was being made really.Comment

Re: Off Topic 2014
My right eye is a lost cause, it was 20/600 (yes, 600) uncorrected and after surgery in 1989 (hand cut incision and all) was 20/200, which is still legally blind. Amblyopia FTL.
However in the late 90's I finally relented and had my good eye done, and we went slightly farsighted so I wear readers, but I test at 20/20 on that eyeBest I could do pre-surgery was 20/60, corrected..and squinting, haha.
So yeah..I am a cyclops. Always have been so I don't miss true 3d lol.

It's still slit (has to be), but what is your understanding of how that slit is made because it's done differently over the years.

Yes. For me they put a suction type thing when they cut you. You don't feel anything. My right eye went black so I couldn't see anything. I could see some stuff with my left eye but not much. They also gave me a Valium before the surgery.MLB: Texas Rangers

Sounds like dickey got it a little better off because the affects of the drops wearing off hours after the surgery was the only part about the procedure that was unbearable for me and it was obviously made much worse by the fact that I couldn't rub them.Comment

I got a wide range of drops In my eye to completely numb them.

I'm so glad I got LASIK over PRK. I was qualified for both but went with LASIK. LASIK is a more dangerous surgery but a quicker recovery time and less the user has to do. I figured I'd leave it to the professionals versus leaving it up to me.MLB: Texas Rangers

Re: Off Topic 2014
My old roommate had to have PRK. From what I remember, infantry weren't allowed to get LASIK when they were in the service. Something about the flap from LASIK having a chance to rupture causing permanent blindness if they received some head trauma (getting blown up by an IED in a truck or anything like that.) They said our risk of it was just too great so everyone I know in the military got PRK when they had their eyes done in the service.badComment

I had lasik too but I'm sure tons has changed since I had it done, we're talking 12 years ago for my first procedure. I'm not even familiar with PRK...Comment

Re: Off Topic 2014
The most rudimentary way of explaining it is that they sand your eyeball.
Basically the rods and stuff in your eyes grow to be uneven which is what is causing the vision impairment. With LASIK, they cut the flap and fold up the ep-something to access the area you are getting surgery on. With PRK, they remove it entirely and a new one will grow back over the course of healing.badComment
