Re: Off Topic 2014
Since I started working at my most recent job, I've only gotten paychecks that have just SS and Medicare taken out, despite filling out my W4 with all zeros for exemptions, which as far as I know means I should be having the maximum amount withheld for FICA and state.
I've talked to the finance department and they told me that I should be getting all of that taken out of my checks, and they're not sure why I'm not.
This is pretty alarming to me, and I'd really rather not have to pay several thousand dollars this time next year because somebody else ****ed up.

Re: Off Topic 2014
If you're only having SS and Medicare taken out and that's how you filled out your W4, they probably have you set up in the system as being exempt from Federal and State taxes.
Does your company do its own payroll? You need to tell them to get it fixed. After it gets fixed, look at how much is taken out each paycheck for Federal and State. Then calculate how much you're behind going back to the beginning of the year (it's too late to get this fixed for 2013). Fill out a new W4 (and also the equivalent of the W4 for your specific state) that instructs them to take an additional amount per paycheck until you catch up.
If you do not do this and you end up paying in at the end of the year, you can end up paying a penalty for not having enough taxes taken out of your paychecks.
And I know it does suck that someone else ****ed this up for you, but it is your responsibility to know what taxes you should be paying and check your pay stub when you get it.Comment

Re: Off Topic 2014
You didn't by chance check that box that says you are exempt from federal withholding?
A lot more people check that box then you'd think.
If its not that then payroll is messing something up and you need to put a foot on their neck to fix it.

Re: Off Topic 2014
You actually have to write the word "EXEMPT" in a box, so that is pretty unlikely.Comment

I'll go back to payroll again and just tell them it's still not being taken out. If I checked off the exemption box then it wasn't intentional, but I'll mention that too in case I did. I do partly blame myself for not having looked into this sooner when I thought it was strange, but hopefully I can get it taken care of and get more withheld until I'm caught up.
Thanks for the advice.

Is this a full-time job?
Sometimes part-time jobs don't have enough income to hit that threshold for withholding.

I'm temporary because I will be laid off around the beginning of December, but I work at least 40 hours a week.

Apparently I stole a bag of dog food today
It was the first thing I scanned, then without reading the screen I just pushed "OK", and scanned the rest of my stuff.
Double checked the receipt when I got home to see if it rang up at the right price and it wasn't on there at all. I'm surprised the little alarm didn't sound when I left the store.
